athletic director
Richard Bay, currently executive director of the Univer
sity of Michigan's alumni association, will become the
University's intercollegiate athletics director on Aug 1.
Bay's appointment, announced June 16 by Ray Hawk,
University vice-president for administration and finance, was
the result of a three-month search that included more than 55
candidates Bay replaces athletic director John Caine, who
resigned March 23 after being told by the University admin
istration he no longer would be athletic director
Curt Simic, vice-president for public services, says
administrators selected Bay for his ability to direct the
University's athletic future
"Rick Bay will relate to the off-campus groups of Univer
sity alumni and friends in a way that will create understanding,
inspire confidence and generate support," Simic says. "He
understands public relations and fund raising, and both are
essential elements of a successful athletic program "
Bay, 38, has worked as alumni director for seven years
He previously had been head wrestling coach, director of
academic counseling and assistant professor of physical
education at the University of Michigan
Bay earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan in 1965,
majoring in speech and English He was named the Big 10
Conference's outstanding wrestler in 1965 and the National
Collegiate Athletic Association wrestling coach of the year in
1974
A former Boston marathoner who finished in the top 15
percent of the 1979 race, Bay has traveled to more than 35
countries on behalf of the University of Michigan and amateur
sports associations
"Rick Bay is a principled person — not a man of ex
pediency but one who does what he knows is right," Hawk
says "He is a strong supporter of both men’s and women’s
athletics, and I truly feel we will have one athletic department
under Rick Bay, not two."
