University profs
win qrant funds
Thirteen University faculty
members will receive nearly
$30,000 in Faculty Research
Awards for study to be con
ducted this summer and next
year
The grants are intended as
"seed money" to assist young
faculty members with "new
lines of research and projects
which may lead to application
tor continued outside funding,
says Fred Wilhelm, award
program coordinator and
assistant to the University
graduate school dean
Due to limited funds, applica
tions for summer awards were
accepted from assistant profes
sors and untenured associate
professors only. Wilhelm says
Of 36 who applied for the $2,500
stipends, 10 were chosen
The academic year grants
were available to faculty
members of all ranks Of 13
proposals submitted, three were
approved for a total of $4,850
Summer awards provide
stipends for recipients who are
receiving no other salary during
the summer months Academic
year grants cover such re
search-related expenses as
student wages, equipment,
supplies and in-state travel
Money tor the awards, which
will be disbursed July 1. comes
from a state appropriation Wil
helm says this is the only block
of money earmarked for
research that the University
receives from the state of
Oregon, and it's the only intra
mural assistance we offer "
