Women third at nationals
Warren doubles; Harmon tops javelin field
By JODY MURRAY
Of thm Emerald
Leann Warren scored two
victories and Sally Harmon one
as Oregon's track team took a
big leap into national promin
ence by tying for third at the
AIAW national championships.
The Ducks scored 40 points
to tie Florida State. Tennessee
tallied 61 points to edge UCLA
(57) for the team title in often
soggy conditions in Austin,
Texas.
Oregon’s team performance
pulled them out of a two-year rut
of scoring 19 points at
nationals. Last year that was
enough to tie for tenth; the year
before that they were eighth.
Warren, the favorite in the 800
and 1,500, scored surprisingly
easy wins in both events. The
Oregon sophomore cruised to
an AlAW-record 4:15.0 in the
1,500 to defeat Monica Joyce of
San Diego State (4:16.15). She
then came back 55 minutes later
in the 800 and ran down Ten
nessee’s Delisa Walton with a
2:06.07. Walton was second in
2:08.37.
While Warren's success was
expected, Harmon's was not.
Another Oregon sophomore,
Harmon heaved a personal best
of 177-10 in the javelin to record
Oregon’s first individual title
ever at an AIAW meet.
Harmon had a season best of
168- 5 coming into the meet. She
threw her former all-time best of
169- 10 as a high school senior.
In the javelin’s qualifying
round Thursday, Harmon ex
ploded with a 172-5 for the best
throw of the day. Then, in
Saturday’s finals, she popped

second throw in the preliminary
round. Harmon’s entire series
was impressive: 164-0, 177-10,
170-7, 168-8, 163-1, 164-11.
Other individual points for
Oregon were tallied by Eryn
Forbes (fifth in the 5,000), Lisa
O’Dea (sixth in the 3,000) and
