    Open letter to Legislature
Faculty use full-page ad to protest cuts
By BILL MANNY
Of the Emerald
Almost 300 University faculty members
used a full-page newspaper adverti
sement to ask the Legislature to repay
the loyalty faculty have shown the state
and the University.
In an advertisement in the Salem
Statesman-Journal Thursday, 295
Oregon faculty members asked legisla
tors to "consider carefully the harm that
your vote to cut the proposed higher
education budget will bring to the
University and to its sister institutions."
In the "open letter to the Oregon
Legislature," the faculty members
warned of the consequences of under
funding higher education and said
"reputations once lost are seldom
bought at any price."
The letter also warned that cuts being
considered in the Legislature would
"obliterate” the quality of state higher
education, and cost state universities the
best faculty, students and potential
students.
About 20 volunteers collected signa
tures and an average $10 each from the
signees to help pay for the adver
tisement, according to Don Tull, market
ing department head and spokesperson
for the Loyalty, Exit, Voice committee.
The committee raised $3,000 and
spent $1,652 on the Thursday ad, Tull
said.

IFC elects new chairer
The Incidental Fee Committee began a
year of budget decisions by electing a
summer chairer earlier this week
First-year law student Karsten Ras
mussen was unanimously elected
chairer for summer term. A new chairer
will be elected in the fall.
The committee, elected last month,
also allocated $31 from unallocated re
serves to the Food-Op The money will be
used to pay travel expenses for a speaker
later this term.
In other business, $1,581 were
released from MEChA's reserve account
in this year’s budget. The money will be
used to fund a concert and a Cinco de
Mayo celebration, a holiday recognizing
Mexico’s independence from France
The balance of the collected money
has been deposited in a bank account
and will be used to purchase another
advertisement later in the session, Tull
said.
The committee's name comes from the
three options University faculty members
have — to remain loyal, to leave, or to
voice their concerns, Tull said
The letter was paid solely by faculty
money, according to faculty treasurer
Mike Hopewell.
The open letter to the Legislature was
sent “to point out more succinctly and
more dramatically the damage that will
be done” to the University if higher
education funding is cut any more than
the 3 percent Gov. Vic Atiyeh has
proposed, Tull said.
Tull said the advertisement was pur
chased now because “at this point in
time, with the decision so near and the
stakes so high, we needed to do
something.”
The final draft of the letter in the
advertisement was written by Lawrence
Pierce, head of the political science
department, James Lemert, a journalism
professor, and William Strange, an Eng
lish professor.
Tull stressed the remaining money
would be saved and spent on another
advertisement, and said he was grateful
to those who gave money and time to the
effort
