Oregon senior Scott Krieger
will try to make up for lost time
at the NCAA Golf Champion
ships in Palo Alto, Calif.
“I thought I would be an
All-American and be winning
tournaments when I came
here,” Krieger says. "It’s been
disappointing.”
Krieger, in his fifth year at
Oregon after red-shirting his
junior season, has yet to win a
collegiate tournament or gain
All-American honors. But he
came to Oregon in 1976
labeled as the top junior player
in the state, and possibly in the
Northwest.
"When I got in college I lost
a lot of confidence,” he says.
“Maybe I was intimidated by
some of the players.
"It goes in cycles. Some
times you are the number-one
player and other times you are
just another player struggling
along.”
But now Krieger is playing
his best golf in years, thanks to
new-found confidence and
improved putting, says the golf
team captain and number-two
seed.
He speaks anxiously about
the NCAA tourney. "It is the
biggest tourney I’ve played. I
would love for us to finish in
the top seven, because that
would be the best finish this
school has ever had. I’d like to
fr
go away and say I was a part of
it.
“Individually, I’d like to win
(the tournament). The way I'm
putting, there is no reason I
can’t win. I know I'm as good
as anyone down there.
“Two years ago, I would
have gone there and hoped to
not embarrass myself.”
Krieger’s problem in col
legiate golf is that he tries too
hard, says golf coach Jim Fer
guson. “With school and golf,
Scott puts too much pressure
on himself."
On top of that, Krieger
tossed the possibility of pro
golf, marriage and business
into his juggling act.
“The problem was that I
didn’t know what I wanted to
do with my future. I wasn’t
willing to commit to anything,"
Krieger says.
But Krieger became com
mitted to professional golf, ty
ing for first place with a pair of
72s at the U S. Open local
qualifier in Vancouver, Wash.,
May 18.
Krieger outshot most of the
field, which included Oregon
pros Pat Fitzsimmons and
Brent Murray, while the golfing
conditions were horrid. A
downpour soaked the course
and flooded the greens.
"If you let (the conditions)
get to you, it can break your
concentration. I kept my poise
for a change.
Krieger has to pass the
regional qualifier in June
before he advances to the na
tional qualifying tournament,
where he could have a chance
to compete alongside the Jack
Nicklauses and Tom Watsons.
Krieger plans to turn pro in
July and play in Australia. He
hopes to refine his game there
and eventually return to play
the U S. tour.
After five years of school, he
is excited about traveling and
playing for money. It is
something his father, Don, a
three-time Oregon Amateur
Open winner, never exper
ienced.
Golf was a hard way to earn
money compared to the prize
money offered now, says Don
Krieger, who played as an
amateur during the 1950s.
"I'm behind him 100 per
cent,” his father says. "The
odds are against you, but he
knows what he is going to do
and he’s not worried about
what others think. He’s got a
lot of guts."
But today, Scott Krieger will
test his determination against
a strong field of golfers at the
NCAA tournament. And there
is no reason he can’t finish as
low-man.

26. Teams will need to check daily in the RIM office to find game
