    Veterans need to enroll
in health care program
Active duty military personnel and retirees
who have moved to Oregon since Oct. 31, 1980,
should check with their personnel office to enroll
their dependents in the Defense Enrollment
Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
DEERS is a mandatory new program for
checking eligibility for Department of Defense
health care benefits. The program has been
operational in Oregon since July 31 of last year.
When an individual enters a military hospital
or clinic, his or her eligibility for treatment may tie
checked through either a computer terminal or a
telephone hook-up.
The checks are made against a data base
containing information on those eligible for
defense department benefits. Enrollment on the
data base is automatic for all active duty
personnel and retirees receiving annuities. How
ever, it is the sponor’s responsibility to enroll his
or her eligible dependents.
Retirees not receiving annuities and sur
vivors must enroll themselves as well as their
dependents.
Enrollment in DEERS is being implemented
on a phased basis across the country. South
eastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina
were the first to join the new system, beginning in
Nov. 1979.
Until implementation is complete and the
data base is accurate, no one will be denied
medical care if he or she is not enrolled in DEERS.
However, once the program is fully operational,
those who are proven ineligible for treatment may
be billed for the services they receive.
Information on what is needed to enroll your
(dependents can be obtained by contacting your
nearest parent service Personnel or Customer
Service office. DEERS Field Maintenance
Representative Chryl Clinton can be contacted at
(707) 644-9991 or by writing the DEERS Field
Maintenance Office, CSTSC, Building H-1, Room
217, Mare Island, Cal., 94592.
