Arts and sciences
gains new dean
University history Prof. Robert Berdahl has been ap
pointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective
Julyl.
Berdahl, 44, joined the University faculty in 1967. He was
associate dean for arts and sciences undergraduate affairs
and in July and August 1980 Berdahl served as acting dean of
the college. He served as associate dean of the college from
1977 to 1980.
He replaces chemistry Prof. John Baldwin, who served as
dean from 1975 to 1980. Glenn Starlin, professor emeritus of
speech, has been acting dean this academic year
"We are extremely fortunate to have Bob Berdahl as
sume this set of demanding responsibilities," said acting
Provost Richard Hill, who announced the appointment.
Hill said Berdahl was selected after a national search that
attracted “a large group of highly qualified candidates." An
earlier internal search for a new dean ended when faculty
requested that a national search be conducted.
Berdahl holds a bachelor’s degree from Augustana
College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a master's degree from
the University of Illinois in Urbana, and a doctoral degree from
the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
He is the co-author of the book "Klassen and Kultur" and
currently is completing a book on the politics of the Prussian
nobility. He has written numerous articles on German nation
alism and on conservative politics in Prussia.
Berdahl served as a research associate at the Institute for
Advanced Study at Princeton in 1972-73, and held research
stipends at the Max Planck Institute for History at Gottingen,
Germany, during the summers of 1978 and 1979 and in the fall
of 1980.
His teaching specialties are German history, European
history since 1789 and topics of intellectual and political
history including the history of the aristocracy and intellectual
currents in early modern Germany.

there is an all-greek dance at
Sigma Chi.

Recognition Day, Sorority Chug
Greeks wear an emblem to
signify their respective houses.
Sorority chug takes place that
night at Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Five-member teams from each
sorority will compete in an
elimination chug-off.
Archaeologist joins staff
The well-known ar
chaeologist Jessie Jennings
has joined the University anth
ropology department.
Jennings currently is teach
ing a seminar on United States
pre-history and plans to teach a
seminar every spring term.
He left a teaching job at the
University of Utah but will return
