Four Duck marks fall at Cal meet
In an impressive warmup to next
weekend’s AIAW championships,
Oregon’s track team set four school
records Sunday at the Pacific Coast
Invitational in Berkeley, Cal.
Lexie Miller recorded two wins for
Oregon in the 400- and 100-meter
hurdles. Miller clocked a 58.41 in the
longer race to defeat Arizona’s Robin
Marks, who owns the fastest U S. time
this year.
Miller's time broke her own Oregon
record of 59.9 set earlier this year.
The order of finish was the same in
the short hurdle race, as Miller
clocked a 13.97 to Marks’ 14.04 Ore
gon’s Kris Costello was third in 14.26.
Grace Bakari won the 400 to lower
her Oregon record from 53.7 to 53.3.
Bakari’s teammate, Lena Fritzson,
had a personal best of 55.53 in that
race.
In the 3,000, Lisa O'Dea finished
second in an Oregon-record 9:22.4.
Joan Hanson of Arizona was the win
ner in 9:03.5. Oregon's Eryn Forbes
finished just behind O’Dea in 9:22.9.
O'Dea’s time erased Molly Morton's
standard of 9:25.1, set in 1979. When
this season began, Morton held the
Oregon record in the 3,000, 5,000 and
10,000. All three have now fallen, the
other two to Forbes
Oregon’s final record-breaking
performance came on the field, where
Karen McDonald heaved the discus
173-8 to continue her assault on the
school standard. Her old mark, set at
the Northwest championships, was
170-11.
Her throw only was enough for
fourth, however, as Arizona’s British
transplant and world leader, Meg Rit
chie, threw 213-10 to win. Mariette
Harriden of South Africa was third at
185-2 and Lorna Griffin of Athletics
West t rew 178-0 on her last attempt.
The Ducks also picked up two more
qualifiers for nationals to bring their
total to 11 individuals, plus the
defending champion mile relay team.
Melanie Batiste won the 200 in
24.10 to nip the AIAW standard of
24 14. Batiste is slowly returning to
form after suffering from hamstring
problems through most of the season.
Batiste also finished second in the
100 with a 12.13 time.
Ranza Clark knocked two seconds
off her season best in the 800 to finish
in 2:09.03. The AIAW mark is 2:09.64.

Kearney, now competing for the Ore
gon Track Club, won the javelin with a
184-4 throw. Oregon’s Sally Harmon
was third at 162-3, behind Oregon
State’s Jeanne Eggart (162-9), who
Harmon had beaten the weekend
before at the Northwest meet
Oregon’s Leann Warren did not
compete because a slight leg muscle
strain.

two, softball
season ends
Oregon’s women’s softball
team ended its season on a los
ing note as it dropped two
games to Oregon State Satur
day, 2-1,6-2.
Oregon State, which will be
playing in the Collegiate World
Series later this month, jumped
to an early lead in the opener as
the Beavers capitalized on Duck
mistakes. Four Duck errors al
lowed the Beavers to score
single runs in the first and
second innings.
Behind the pitching of Ann
Kendall, the Beavers controlled
the Ducks until the sixth inning
when Oregon scored its only
run.
Oregon’s Marcy Sowa picked
up the loss despite allowing only
four hits.
The second game was all
Beavers as they jumped to a 4-1
lead after three innings. OSU
used seven hits to bring in six
runs and only committed one
error. The Ducks were unable to
capitalize on eight hits.
Oregon ended the season
with a 9-19 record.
Soccer squad
splits contests
at Cal tourney
Playing its final games as a
University-sponsored sport, the
women’s soccer team split two
games at the Cal Invitational in
Berkeley.
The Ducks were unable to
hold off an overtime charge by
Cal-Berkeley Saturday for a 1-0
loss to the Bears. Oregon
bounced back Sunday in the
consolation bracket to trounce
Stanford University, 6-0.
Despite outshooting the
Bears 35-4, the Ducks were un
able to break a scoreless dead
lock at the end of regulation
play and two overtimes.
After each team knocked in a
goal during the five-shot shoo
tout, the Ducks missed their first
attempt in sudden death while
the Bear’s first attempt hit the
goal post and deflected the ball
into the net.
