    Tennis tourney
deadline nears
Players of all ages are invited
to participate in a spring tennis
tournament at the University
The tournament will be divid
ed into eight age groups, in
cluding open categories and
singles and doubles groups.
Matches will begin at 1:30 p.m.
May 22 and continue through
May 24.
Entry forms are available at
the athletic department. All
entties are due by 5 p.m. Friday.

After a year of early moring
workouts, the Oregon crew
team is ready for the Pacific-10
Conference crew champion
ships in Palo Alto, Calif, this
weekend
The Duck crew team, a club
sport at Oregon, will be
competing against teams that
are university sponsored, says
crew member Tim Meier.
"They usually have better
equipment, and coaching. But
we have more heart.”
The University of Washing
ton is expected to take the
team title again, Meier says.
"But we could get lucky."
The team will enter four
classes — four-man heavy,
four-man light, eight-man
heavy and eight-man light.
Each boat will also include a
coxswain — the person that
keeps the rowers on stroke
along the 2,000-meter course.

The classes are determined
by the weight of the rowers.
Each rower must weigh less
than 160 pounds in the light
class, with the average weight
being no more than 155
pounds. The heavy class is
open ended, Meier says.
“The division is there
because the larger guys can
pull a little harder,” Meier said.

Crew team rows into Pac-10

funding they won’t take any
shells to the meet. “When we
go to races we borrow boats."
However, that doesn’t
hinder the team, Meier says.
"The race is all in the legs."
OTC sets date
for half-marathon
A half-marathon will wind its
way through Eugene streets
June 7, with the start and finish
lines at Hayward Field.
Oregon Track Club is spon
soring the 13.1 mile run. Top
prize in the men’s and women’s
divisions is all-expense paid trip
to the Portland run-off June 30.
Registration is $5. Entry
blanks are available at Nike
Eugene, in the Atrium Building
downtown, and at Sugar Pine
Ridge, next to the Bookstore.
Ruggers take on
English Sharks
Oregon's club sport rugby
team will take on the Shevington
Sharks Sunday.
The Sharks, from Wigan,
England, are touring the
Northwest and will be in Eugene
Thursday to conduct a series of
clinics on rugby coaching and
playing techniques.
The game will begin at 2 p.m.
Sunday at the Intramural Field,
west of Hayward Field.
Soccer fans set
trip to Timbers
A trip this weekend to the
Portland Timbers soccer match
against the Calgary Boomers
Saturday is being planned.
A bus, dubbed the Timber
Express, will leave at 4:45 p.m.
Saturday from DeFrisco’s for
the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The pack
age, which costs $15, includes a
general admission ticket to the
game and roundtrip fare to
Portland. Beer will be sold on
the bus.
“We re hoping for a good tur
nout,” says Stan Ross of H&R
