University center highlights solar energy
By PETER SLEETH
Of the Emerald
Despite Oregon's oft-lamented rain, solar energy is
alive and glowing at the University’s Solar Energy
Center.
A joint venture between the architecture school
and the physics department for the past six years, the
center offers an information bureau and a research
program. Findings are published regularly and are
available to the public
The research arm of the center, headed by physics
Prof. Dave McDaniels, regularly collects statewide data
on solar potential, with some surprising results.
For instance, the center has found that Oregon’s
solar potential compares favorably with California’s.
"We’ve measured direct solar radiation and shown
we have 75 percent of the direct radiation on an annual
basis as in Barstow," Calif., McDaniels says. “And 94
percent in the summer."
But McDaniels doubts much of that energy will be
used until the Reagan administration quits its "oil-well
mentality.”
Because of Reagan's proposed 60-percent cut in
the government s solar energy program, the informa
tion center is expecting an increase in demand for its
services, according to John Jennings, information
coordinator.
Located in Emerald Hall, the information center
offers a library with current solar data and a referral
center, complete with tax credit information, for those
interested in harnessing the sun.
The center s activities, including regular seminars,
reach beyond the campus and sometimes include
statewide projects.
“There's clearly a lot of public events that happen
as a result of the center," says University architecture
Prof. John Reynolds, director of the center.
Solar projects also are benefiting campus
residents. Solar collectors in the east campus student
housing, installed last year, are expected to reduce
utility bills by 50 percent.
The center’s next seminar will be held at the Central
Presbyterian Church, 1475 Ferry St., tonight at 7:30
p.m. Southern Oregon State College Prof. Tom Marvin
will lecture on "Solar Electric Conversion: A Residential
Photovoltaic Application.
