Cal, Oregon coaches promise close meet
By TAMARA SWENSON
Of the Emerald
Neither coach is willing to claim victory in
Saturday's men’s track meet between Cal-Ber
keley and Oregon at Hayward Field.
The two Pacific-10 Conference foes will con
clude their dual meet seasons this weekend. Cal
has a 5-1 dual record, while the Ducks are at 4-1
after humbling Oregon State last weekend.
"A lot of the events are going to be close,"'
says track coach Bill Dellinger. "Every point is
going to count.
“I have it figured out as about a one-point
spread.”
Cal’s view is almost the same. Cal coach Erv
Hunt expects the winner to have a good shot at
the number-two dual ranking in the country. “We
can decide our own destiny this Saturday," Hunt
says.
A few points lost by the Ducks could give the
meet to Cal, Dellinger says. "The sprints are
close, the distances are close and the weights are
close. It appears to be that the javelin and the
5,000 meters are the only sure Oregon events.
"Obviously, if the conditions are right, either
team could pull it through," Dellinger says.
For the Ducks to pull it out, they must over
come some nagging injuries that have plagued
them all season.
Jon Switzer, sidelined by a sore hamstring for
three weeks, is expected to return to pole vault
competition Saturday. Switzer, who went 17-0
earlier in the season, will be challenged by Cal’s
Ross McAlexander who has a lifetime best of 17-0
(16-6!4 this season).
Rudy Chapa will make his return to
competition in the 1,500. Chapa has been both
ered by a variety of ailments all spring but seems
to be back in shape, says Dellinger. "I’m pleased
with his performance in the last couple workouts.
I’m sure he’ll be ready for a good race.”
Slight injuries to sprinter Larry Bradley and
hurdler Don Ward could hurt Oregon's chances in
their respective events, Dellinger says.
“Cal has to be favored in the high hurdles,
and could take the intermediate hurdles."
Cal hurdler Larry Cowling, who has run
13.82/51.59, could win the highs and challenge
Oregon’s Don Ward (50.99) in the intermediates.
Bradley competed for the Ducks at the OSU
meet in the 200 and 400 relay, but sat out the 100.
Bradley (10.53/21.22) will be challenged by Derek
Robinson (10.55w/21.01) and Ted White (20.9w).
Robinson ran his 21.0 last Saturday in the
Bear’s meet against Stanford.
Top-quality competition is also expected in
the discus and the shot put.
In the discus, Oregon's Dean Crouser (213-0)
is favored, but could be challenged by Cal's Dave
Porath (200-0).
"Dave is a total strength thrower, using very
little technique, while Dean is technically super
ior,” says weight coach Ray Burton. "I have to
give Dean the definite edge.
“Mentally (Crouser) can handle himself a lot
better and has faced some of the best. Dave
hasn't had any competition this season, and it
could hurt him,” Burton says.
Porath is favored in the shot put (64-8), says
Burton. “But Dean or Vince (Goldsmith) could get
in a good throw and beat him.”
