    North coast awaits the adventurous
By LESLIE FARRIS
Of the Emerald
There’s more to the coast of
Oregon than the beaches and
dunes surrounding the town of
Florence.
But unfortunately, most
students spending a day at the
coast never venture beyond this
area.

If it wasn’t for summer cloth
ing sales, many University
students who make their
livelihood pushing new fashions
wouldn’t be on campus today.
I was one of them.
In fact, last summer’s

went so well that I could afford
to work only 20 hours a week.
But it’s not a nice story. I was
a salesclerk.
It’s 7 o’clock on a sunny Sa
turday morning at a major
downtown Portland department
store.
Inside, 20 hungry sales clerks
huddle around the cash register
like hobos around a fire, waiting
for a final pep talk from their
field marshal — the department
manager.
Meanwhile, teams of high
school girls pile on makeup and
take flattering glances in the
mirror as they pile sacks and
boxes at gift-wrapping stations
around the store.
Now the manager straightens
his tie and pushes his glasses to
the top of his nose.
"Each one of you will be ex
pected to sell $3,000 worth of
merchandise today," he an
nounces from his cash-register
pulpit.
Veteran salesclerks perk up
instantly and draw slim calcula
tors from their pockets to figure
their commission.
“That’s over $200 in just one
day!" a delirious clerk screams.
The emotion and anticipation
among the clerks can only be
compared to a daytime TV game
show.
Outside the store, throngs of
sale-addicts press closer to the
entrances, counting down the
minutes to the sale’s launch.
Already among their ranks,
plain-clothes security guards
scout for the would-be sho
plifters.
Almost as soon as the doors
open, the neat piles and stacks
of sweaters, shirts and slacks
disappear as shoppers
scavenge for the right size.
Electronic cash registers
begin spitting out receipts so
fast it looks like a ticker-tape

For those bold enough to
spend the time and monev, the
coastal area to the north holds
varied attractions. And the top
most coastal city, Astoria, is
especially attractive to photo
graphers and history buffs.
Fort Astoria was established
in 1811, and there is a 525-foot
spiral frieze adorning the Astor
Column to recount much of
Astoria’s history.
The view from the top spans
mountains and ocean.
Near the column is a pioneer
cemetery, and a mile down the
hill is the Columbia River Mari
time Museum. Scattered
throughout the town are historic
buildings, from homes built by
covered-wagon immigrants to
Summer days bring sales
and sorrows to clothes stores
parade.
“Can-l-help-yous?” barrage
the shoppers from every direc
tion and clerks secretly tally a
scorecard of their sales.
Ten hours later the crowd has
thinned a bit and the public-ad
dress system echoes “thank
you-for-shoppings” to encour
age the shoppers to leave.
The registers are closed, but
one customer has stayed in the
dressing room, not hearing the
announcement. The register
rings one last time that day and
a shopper drops a thank you
over her shoulder on the way
out the door.

South of Astoria at Fort Clat
sop National Memorial is a re
plica of Lewis and Clark’s
1805-06 winter headquarters.
Farther south, the vista from
Ecola State Park on Tillamook
Head includes an abandoned
lighthouse and a sea lion roo
kery. Many appreciated, expan
sive beaches lie in this area,
including Ecola Beach, where
Captain Clark took Sacajawea
to see a stranded whale, and
Cannon Beach with its Haystack
Rock and sand sculpture con
tests.
Other coastal attractions well
worth the price of getting there
are the Tillamook loop and the
three-capes scenic route. Once
in the cheese factory town of
Tillamook, take Third Street
west for eight miles, continue
past a sign that points toward
Oceanside, and find a beach of
graceful driftwood and fantastic
trees.
Return to the junction and
turn right to Cape Meares State
Park, where trails lead to a
lighthouse and the grotesque
Octopus Tree. Then go on to
Oceanside where there’s a view
of the offshore Three Arch
Rocks National Wildlife Refuge,
home of sea lions, and one of
the largest bird nesting areas in
the country.
Cape Meares is the farthest
north of the three capes. Farther
soouth is Cape Lookout State
Park, a wooded headland jut
ting far into the sea. A large, and
well-kept state camping facility
is located on the north side of
the cape.
The 12-mile drive south to
Cape Kiwanda offers gentle
farmlands, wild shrubbery and
flowers, waving beach grass,
sandy ridges and spectacular
views of northern Oregon's part
of the ocean and its near-de
serted beaches. Groceries, pic
nic supplies and restaurants are
available in nearby Pacific City.
