OSU claims tennis victory
Three doubles matches and
two singles matches went to
Oregon State Tuesday as the
Beavers claimed a 5-4 victory
over the Duck women in tennis
action at Corvallis.

proved to be the top match of
the day, as Bartlett and Hunt
dueled OSU’s Shannon Miller
and Beth Falkenberry to the
wire.
The Duck duo won the first
set, 5-7, then dropped the
second set, 7-5
In the third, and final set, the
two doubles teams battled back
and forth, but the OSU women
finally claimed the 7-6 victory.
Jodie Estes defeated Jean
Bauman 7-5, 6-4 in the number
four match, number-five seed
Janet Fowkes defeated Beth Ni
bler 6-4, 6-1, and Janet Farrell
defeated Penny Kingsbury 6-4,
6-0 in the number-six spot for
Oregon’s other wins.
The Duck women, now 9-6 for
the season, will host the Univer
sity of Puget Sound at 3:30 pm.

Portland State's Lomax
picked 33rd in NFL draft
PORTLAND (AP) - Record
breaking quarterback Neil
Lomax of Portland State admits
he was disappointed Tuesday
when he wasn't chosen in the
first round of the National Foot
ball League draft.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound
Lomax was selected by the St.
Louis Cardinals early in the
second round.
He was the 33rd player cho
sen in the draft and was the
second quarterback selected.
The first, California’s Rich
Campbell was drafted by the
Green Bay Packers and was the
sixth player chosen in the first
round.
Heisman Trophy winner
George Rogers from South Ca
rolina was the number-one
selection, as expected. Rogers
was claimed by the New Orleans
Saints.
"I’m a little disappointed I
didn't go in the first round,"
Lomax said. “If it’s not a shock,
maybe it's a surprise.”
“That taught me a little les
son," he said. “Don’t expect too
much.”
St. Louis head coach Jim
Hanifan said he was extremely
surprised when Lomax still was
available in the second round.
“All of a sudden Neil’s sitting
there and we're saying, 'My
Lord, we’ve got a chance to pick
a guy who can fill our future
needs,” Hanifan said. “It’s an
ideal situation for him. When
Neil was sitting there, it was too
nice plum not to pick.”
Lomax, competing in the
NCAA Division 1-AA, passed for
13,220 yards in four seasons,
including 106 for touchdowns.
Last season he had his best
statistics, completing 296 of 473
passes for 4,094 yards and 37
touchdowns. He said he was
looking forward to rejoining
wide receiver Dave Stief. Stief
played with Lomax at Portland
State and currently plays for the
Cardinals
Lomax is expected too back
up 15-year veteran Jim Hart at
quarrterback.
"What you have in Neil Lomax
is a heckuva fine athlete and a
heckuva fine person," he said.
“His stats speak for themselves.
I saw him in the Senior Bowl.
He’s a young, strong kid. He's
got a lot of things going for
him.”
Lomax admitted that not be
ing picked in the first round will
cost him money in contract
negotiations.
“I’m sure it will,” he said, “but
that’s for my attorney to
decide."
In other dealings, the Seattle
Seahawks, in an attempt to
shore up their porous defensive
unit, took UCLA defensive back
Kenny Easley in the fourth
selection of the first round
Easley’s crosstown foe,
defensive back Ronnie Lott of
USC, was a first-round selection
for San Francisco.
