Steelers draft Hinkle while others wait
Oregon linebacker Bryan
Hinkle received his nod from the
National Football League Wed
nesday, as the Duck senior was
picked up by the Pittsburg
Steelers.
The Steelers drafted Hinkle as
the eight selection in the sixth
round, about where it was ex
pected the Oregon linebacker
would go.
Three other Ducks, Vince
Goldsmith, Kevin McGill and
Neil Elshire, who sat out the
season because of injury, are
given a good chance of being
chosen early today as the NFL
begins its final six rounds.
Hinkle was not available for
comment Tuesday evening, but
an Associated Press report said
the Steelers organization was
pleased with the choice, calling
the linebacker a good addition

Bryan Hinkle (16) became Oregon's first NFL draft pick this year as the Pittsburg Steelers picked him up
in the sixth round.
to a strong ballclub.
In his four-year career with
the Ducks, Hinkle, 6-2 and 205
pounds, was named Pacific-10
Defensive Player of the Week
several times, including three
times as a junior despite playing
only part of the season.
Goldsmith, named the
Pac-10’s outstanding defensive
lineman last fall, has a good
chance of being picked early,
“but I’m not counting on it," he
said Tuesday.
"It’s not something I’m going
to worry about."
Goldsmith, 5-11 and 230
pounds, says his size shouldn’t
be a handicap. “At least I think
so — but they seem to be con
cerned about it."
Goldsmith also made the
Pac-10 first team in 1979 and
1980.
Oregon’s second draft pos
sibility, Kevin McGill, said he
was hoping to go in Tuesday’s
draft. “But I should go the first
thing tommorrow ”
McGill, a 6-7, 266-pound of
fensive tackle, was the biggest
man on the Duck roster last
season. "I expect to go as a
pass blocker-tackle," he said.
“I don’t care what team, I just
want a chance to go out there
and show them I can do it.
‘‘I didn't get serious about
football until I was in college,"
the senior tackle said. “Now I
feel I’m just getting started,
before I was just learning — now
I’m ready to get in there and
really play.
“I have a few more good years
before me."
The final member of the Duck
draft trio, Neil Elshire, didn't
play last season because of a
knee injury. But as a junior, the
6-5, 246-pound defensive end
joined Goldsmith as the Ducks
one-two front line punch.
Despite being sidelined last
season, he is ready to return to
action, Elshire said.
No one is placing all their bets
on the NFL’s draft system to
pick them today, "but it sure
would be nice,” said McGill. “I
know I’m good enough, we’re all
good enough.”
