Making the run for roses
Twenty horses
saddle up for
this season’s
Derby Day
Derby Day is upon us.
And the 107th running of the Kentucky
Derby, the first and most prestigious leg in
the Triple Crown, will take place Saturday.
Among the bright colored silks, polished
saddles and strains of “My Old Kentucky
Home," will be a field of 20 horses vying for
victory at Churchill Downs.
The Kentucky Derby isn’t the only race at
Churchill Downs Saturday. There will also
be a $25,000 race for 2-year-olds before
the Derby. The main event is only for
3-year-olds
As the season's first long race for
3-year-olds — 1 V* miles — Kentucky Derby
fans say the race can make or break a
horse. Past winners have gone on to high
stud fees (or brood fees) and a prestige
few horses know.
The race also provides the first jewel in a
three-race crown, the Belmont and
Preakness being the other two.
But this year's Derby field doesn't have
the same feeling as past races. This year’s
top 3-year-old, Lord Avie, will not be there.
The colt, last season’s 2-year-old champ,
had won two out of three starts this year
but suffered an imflamed tendon in its right
front leg, knocking him out of the Derby
picture.
Despite the loss of Lord Avie, the rest of
the field looks strong with colts who have
recorded wins in the Gotham Stakes,
Flamingo Stakes, Rebel Handicap, Santa
Anita Derby and Wood Memorial.
The possibility does exist of a filly
repeating Genuine Risk’s win last year.
Heavenly Cause, a champion filly as a
2-year-old, won the La Torienne Stakes at
Churchill Downs last Saturday by five
lengths.
But she is not the only horse in the run
for the roses.
Proud Appeal, unbeaten this year in five
starts, is currently the race favorite Like
his sire Valid Appeal, Proud Appeal is a
speed horse who will need to lead from
flagfall to finish.
He will be pressed early by two other
front runners, Cure the Blues and Bold
Ego, but he has shown he can win,
especially with his near-track record of
1:33 35 seconds in the Gotham Stakes by a
nose over Cure the Blues.
However, in his last race, the Blue Grass
Stakes, Proud Appeal turned in a lackluster
performance on his way to victory. Proud
Appeal finished with a slow 1:51 25, only
running 39 45 for his last three furlongs. A
good horse should be able to run that
distance in 37 seconds.
If the race favorite does falter, there are
other horses that can challenge for the title
and the $150,000 winner’s prize.
The colts Tap Shoes, Bold Ego, Splendid
Spruce, Pleasant Colony, Cure the Blues,
Flying Nashua and Double Sonic, as well
as Heavenly Cause, could easily upset the
race favorite.
Completing the field are Hoedown’s Day,
Top Avenger, Clasic Go Go, Well
Decorated, Pass the Tab, Golden Derby,
Always A Cinch, Law Me, Partez. Beu Rit,
Mythical Ruler and Television Studio.
Tap Shoes, son of 1972 Derby winner
Riva Ridge, is considered a good stretch
runner. Tap Shoes recorded wins over Well
Decorated and Double Sonic in the
Flamingo Stakes.
The colt’s trainers also have been
preparing for the Derby. Tap Shoes’ recent
workouts have been long and slow, an
effort to build his stamina for the long
Derby race.
But Tap Shoes won’t dance across the
finish line without a challenge.
Bold Ego, a speedy colt who won both
the Rebel Handicap and the Arkansas
Derby by leading from wire to wire, could
claim the win if he can move into the lead
early. The horse doesn’t like to run behind.
Splendid Spruce came from behind to
win the Santa Anita Derby in style But the
horse has yet to show any consistency,
except in mud. If it rains he could very well
splash home ahead of the pack.
Pleasant Colony also was inconsistent
early in the season, but his victory over
Cure the Blues in the Wood Memorial by
several lengths establishes the the colt.
This season has been marked by up and
down perfomances by Cure the Blues. The
colt easily won his first start of the year and
lost by a nose to Proud Appeal at the
Gotham.
Cure the Blues couldn’t fell apart in the
Wood, losing by eight lengths. His trainers
have tried to explain away his near
collapse as simply being tired from his duel
with Proud Appeal.
Since the Wood, Cure the Blues has
been training well, and with three-time
Derby winner Bill Shoemaker in the saddle
he could still put it away in the stretch.
Rounding out the top half of the field,
both Flying Nashua and Double Sonic are
come-from-behind colts. If a fast pace
develops they could be near the front at
the finish.
The remainder of the field, while good
horses, does not have the quality of the
first half of the field and is expected to
finish as also ran's. The horses are entered
in the Derby to fill out the field.
All the colts will be carrying 126 pounds
while the filly will pack 121 pounds over the
1 Vi-mile course. Prize money in the Derby
is $150,000 for first, $50,000 for second,
$25,000 for third and $12,500 for fourth.
The race will be televised by ABC-TV
beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Admist strains of "My Old Kentucky
Home" and the traditional call to the post,
20 horses will be vying for the first jewel —
the prestigious Kentucky Derby.

nephew of the "beloved rogue." opens Eugene's de Frisco's, dedicated
to the memory and style of his illustrious ancestor. The tavern
featured Eugene's first serious selection of imported beers in a
traditional atmosphere of solid oak and brass that would have made
Honest Henry" feel right at home. Rosewood backgammon tables
wen1 built to exacting specifications in memory of Uncle Henry's
highly refined sporting instincts, and darts were introduced.
de Frisco’s introduces world famous Heineken and Guiness Stout on
draft to the Eugene area. Among the many distinguished bottled beers
introduced to Eugene at de Frisco's during this lime were Elephant
Malt Liquor, Watney's and Pilsner Urquall, the original pilsner beer
de Frisco's completes the expansion of Eugene's Landmark tavern in
an attempt to better meet the demands of the beer drinking public, de
Frisco's also starts hosting Eugene City Backgammon Championships
annually.
