Cal losses toss almost everythinq to Ducks

Before the season began, the
Oregon women’s track team
figured they had the perfect
schedule — easy meet, tough
meet, easy meet, tough meet,
easy meet.
So far, everything has gone to
plan — a gut-wrenching loss to
UCLA sandwiched between
cakewalks over Washington
and Washington State.
And Saturday at Hayward
Field there's Cal-Berkeley, the
next “blood-and-guts meet” as
coach Tom Heinonen puts it.
Right?
Wrong.
The Bears are only a shell of
the 1980 team that finished
second to Oregon in the na
tional dual meet rankings. Injur
ies and personal problems have
diminished Cal’s ranks to the
point that only 12 athletes will
make the trip to Eugene.
The scenario is similar to the
Oregon men and the Kansas
team they meet in the co-ed
dual. Just as the Jayhawks were
the only team to beat the men in
1980, so did Cal defeat Oregon
at the Cal Invitational for the
Ducks’ only loss last year.
This time around, the team
title is hardly in doubt. Cal won’t
enter the shot put, discus, 800
meters or either relay. The meet
hasn’t even begun and already
the Ducks are ahead by 37
points.
"And that’s a shame," says
Heinonen, “because Cal had a
terrific team coming back, but
lost almost all of their people.”
But even if pre-season hopes
for a close team contest have
Softball squad drops two
at California Invitational
Playing only their second
game in two weeks, members of
the Oregon’s women’s softball
team were unable to hold off two
experienced California squads
Thursday.
In the opening game of the
California Invitational in Ber
keley, the Ducks lost 4-0 to
Sacramento State. They
dropped a 6-3 contest to Fresno
State in their second game.
Against Sacramento, the
Ducks played a tough defensive
ballgame, holding their oppon
ents to a scoreless tie going into
the fifth inning.
But the California school
scored all four of its runs on four
hits in the fifth inning.
The Ducks ended the game
with no runs, three hits and six
errors.
Oregon’s next game, a noon
contest, began dismally as
Fresno State opened up with a
run in the *irst and followed with
three runs in the second.
Oregon’s first run came in the
third inning.
Ahead by three going into the
sixth inning, Fresno scored
twice more to put the game
away. Oregon scored its final
runs in the seventh, finishing the
game with three runs, five hits
and two errors.
"We played two really tough
ball clubs today," said softball
coach John Feeney. "They’ve
been able to play lately and we
haven't. This is where it shows.
Oregon, now 5-8 for the sea
son, will face the University of
San Fransisco and tournament
host Cal-Berkeley today.

several strong matchups on the
individual level.
Probably the best of these will
be the javelin, where Oregon’s
Sally Harmon (161-3 last week)
will meet Cal’s school record
holder, Kristen Engle (162-2 last
week).
“Sally’s had great competi
tion every week," said Heinon
en, referring to WSU’s Jeanne
Eggart, UCLA’s Susie Ray and
Jacque Nelson and Washing
ton's Deanna Carr. "She’s the
only person on our team who
has.”
"Both the 100 and 200 will be
good,” Heinonen says. "Kim
White (12.04/24.24) will put our
sprinters to the test.”
Oregon will shuffle its
sprinters Saturday, putting 400
specialist Grace Bakari in the
short races and moving Lena
Fritzson into the 400.
Two of the longer races will
be interesting. In the 5,000,
Oregon’s Eryn Forbes (16:21.5)
will duel the Bears’ Cindy
Schmandt, who ran a 9:25 3,000
last week. Forbes' best time is
only seconds shy of Molly Mor
ton’s school record of 16:18.3.
In the 1,500, Oregon’s Leann
Warren will shoot for the TAC
meet qualifying time of 4:20. Her
best this year is 4:26.39, but she
ran a 4:15.16 personal best at
the Olympic Trials last year. Last
Saturday, Warren ran the fas
test 800 in the nation this sea
son with a 2:01.30 effort at the
Kansas Relays.
