Injuries mar Kansas dual

Saturday’s men's track meet
with Kansas was projected as
one of Oregon’s major
stumbling blocks for an un
defeated dual meet season.
The Ducks had ended last
year as the fourth-ranked dual
meet team in the nation while
the Jayhawks, on the strength of
their 86-68 win over Oregon,
were ranked second.
Washington State took care
of any hopes for an undefeated
season this year when they
knocked off Oregon, 86-77, last
Saturday.
But looking at an injury
marred Kansas roster, it is
doubtful the Jayhawks can
hand the Ducks two losses in a
row.
Kansas’ problems began last
fall, when hurdler Jim Scannella
decided to transfer to California.
Sophomore 800-meter runner
Ray Marks, who beat the Ducks
last year, had problems with
grades and left school.
Pole vaulter Jeff Buckingham,
who vaulted 17-9 last spring,
was forced to redshirt. He was
joined by Matt Friedman, who
had a best in the discus of
202-5.
Quartermiler Mark Rau (46.9)
broke his ankle during the in
door season and is just now
rebounding back into shape.
Steeplechaser Paul Schultz
(8:47.97) twisted his ankle ear
lier this month.
Finally, the Jayhawks’ two
finest sprinters, Deon Hogan
and Anthony Polk, were
sidelined by muscle pulls at the
Kansas Relays last Friday.
Polk is out indefinitely, but
Hogan will run in the 400 against
Oregon. He won the 100 and
200 in last year’s dual and
brings a career best of 45.38 in
the 400 to Hayward Field

various injuries, grade problems
and transfers is that what could
have been one of the top dual
track encounters in the country
this spring should be an easy
Oregon win.
Oregon has problems of its
own, however.
Sprinter Larry Bradley suf
fered a severe muscle cramp in
his thigh against the Cougars on
the way to a 10.57 win in the
100. He was scratched from the
200 and 1,600 relay at Pullman
by coach Bill Dellinger, but the
injury isn’t as serious as origin
ally believed and Bradley will
compete in the 100, 200 and
both relays.
But pole vaulter Jon Switzer,
who has a career best of 17-9
feet and missed the Washington
State meet with a pulled
hamstring, will sit out this Sa
turday's meet and may not be
ready until the Duck’s meet with
California May 9.
Lamar Hurd, Oregon's fresh
man school record holder in the
triple jump, will be hampered by
a bruised heel. He injured it
against Auburn two weeks ago
on his first jump and failed to go
over 50 feet against the
Cougars.
There is good news, however,
as javelin thrower Frode
Stormyr will return to action
against the Jayhawks. And
there is speculation that Alberto
Salazar, with a 13:22.31 best in
the 5,000, will go for the Amer
ican record of 13:15.06 in that
event.
Must win games await Ducks
Oregon will be in a “must-win"
situation this weekend when
they tace Washington for a
four-game series in Seattle.
The series consists of doub
leheaders today and Saturday,
with Dean Kegler and Mike Talia
scheduled to pitch the first two
games. Coach Mel Krause is
unsure who will pitch Saturday.
The Ducks, 1-4 in the North
ern Division, need to take at
least three of the four games
from the Huskies to have any
chance in the division race
Washington State is the current
division leader with a 4-2 mark.
“It’s a very important series,”
Krause says. “Especially since
we lost two games at home to
Oregon State. Now we have to
make up those two losses on the
road.
“At the very least, we have to
split, and preferably win three.”
Oregon’s fate again lies with
its pitching, particularly since
the Huskies are hitting over
.300 Jeb Best’s .505 mark
paces the potent Washington
attack.
“We have to get better pitch
ing from our starters,” Krause
says.
Both double-headers are
scheduled to start at noon with a
seven-inning game followed by
a nine-inning nightcap.
