I am confused. I read in your
column that sperm can live up
to three days, but when I got my
diaphragm, they told me I only
had to leave it in for six to eight
hours after intercourse. Please
clear this up for me, as I don't
want to become pregnant!
Sperm can live for up to three
days, but only in the uterus or
the fallopian tubes. Sperm in the
vagina will be unable to live
longer than eight hours due to
the vagina's naturally acidic
environment.
Your diaphragm, which
blocks the entrance to the uter
us, need only be left in place for
six to eight hours after inter
course. The contraceptive
cream or jelly that should
always be used with a
diaphragm will kill any sperm
that try to swim from the vagina
into the uterus.
If you use your diaphragm
correctly, and always insert
more contraceptive cream or
jelly with repeated intercourse,
there is only a 2 percent chance
that you would get pregnant
within a year’s time.
What exactly do the clear
drops of pre-ejaculation fluid
contain?
The fluid secreted by men
prior to ejaculation is an alkaline
substance. It is evident at the tip
of the penis as a drop of clear,
sticky material.
This pre-ejaculatory fluid is
released by the cowpers glands,
located below the prostrate
gland on either side of the
urethra.
The fluid helps to remove any
urine that may be present in the
urethra. It also functions in
neutralizing the acidic
environment of the vagina.
Pre-ejaculatory fluid may
contain fertilizing sperm, and
therefore could cause a
pregnancy. However, there is
evidence that a pregnancy is
more likely to occur with
repeated intercourse, as there
will be more sperm present in
the second pre-ejaculatory
fluid.

Reagan says he’s still suffering
pain from his gunshot wound
March 30, and while the episode
seems unreal to this day, he
wonders, too, why he wasn’t
attacked “27 times before."
In an interview Wednesday,
his first with reporters since the
assassination attempt outside a
Washington hotel, Reagan dis
closed that his first thought
•when he heard the gunfire was
"to take a look” around. But the
nearest Secret Service agent,
he noted, "had a different idea."
When he finally realized
he had been wounded, he
said, it was "the most parlyz
ing pain, as if someone hit
me with a hammer.”
That sensation did not occur
until he was in his limousine and
speeding away from the scene,
the president said.
"It still seems unreal,” he
said,
Reagan said he continued to
suffer from what doctors told
him was "one of the longest
enduring discomforts” because
of his type of injury.
“It doesn’t go away,” he said.
"There is that pain.”
Wearing a blue-gray suit,
Reagan walked with a steady
although slightly stiff gait as he
entered the Map Room in the
White House for the 19-minute
interview.

fallopian tubes where fertiliza
tion occurs.
Couples who use withdrawal
as their method of birth control
would do well to keep this in
mind.
