McLaran’s bat lifts Ducks

Substitute Mike McLaran’s
two-out double in the 10th in
ning scored Steve Crum for the
winning run in Oregon’s 7-6
victory over Oregon College of
Education Wednesday at Howe
Field.
McLaran was one of six
replacements inserted into the
lineup in the fifth inning by
coach Mel Krause, whose
strategy of keeping everyone
fresh paid off.
“In a game like this, my
primary goal is to play ever
ybody and keep everyone in
condition. It's also an evaluation
process. If I go with one guy for
five innings and another for
four, it gives the second guy a
chance to play under pressure,”
said Krause.
The Ducks showed their need
to improve their play in pressure
situations as they committed
two errors, made mental
mistakes on the bases and were
guilty of a few other misplays.
As has been its custom of late,
Oregon took a quick lead in the
game with two runs in the first
two innings. Dean Hummel’s
RBI single gave the Ducks a 1-0
lead after one frame and Rick
Moonitz singled in Kirk Camer
on to make it 2-0 after two.
Again, the Ducks stayed with
their normal pattern, allowing
the Wolves to close within 2-1
and eventually gain a 5-2 lead
with a four-run fifth inning.
The fifth was an inning
Oregon pitcher Dan King would
rather forget. OCE opened it
with a double by Harold
Lafountain which fell between
Crum and McLaran. Ernie

Mike McLaran's 10th-inning double powered Oregon past OCE
two-run homer and the Wolves
followed with three more line
drive hits. King looked as
though he’d never get out of the
inning until a batter's interfer
ence call helped him escape
further damage.
Oregon answered the OCE
uprising with a three-run fifth of
its own. OCE hurlers Dana
Salsbury and Bob McCue took
most of the responsibility for the
scoring by combining for three
walks, a hit batter and a wild
pitch.
The Ducks took a 6-5 lead in
the sixth when Mike Black dou
bled, stole third and scored on
McCue's second wild pitch.
However, OCE tied it once
more in the ninth, thanks to two
Oregon errors and a bad throw
by Mike Carr on an attempted
pickoff at second base.
At this point, the Wolves had
the bases loaded and no one
out. But reliever Jim Givens got
out of the jam when Mike Hut
zler hit into a home-to-first dou
ble play and Rich Miller
grounded out.
Next came McLaran’s clutch
double, and Givens (3-2) had
himself a victory.
