Cecil Andrus will speak
on natural resource future
Former Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andrus
will speak tonight at 7 p.m. in the EMU Ballroom
on “The Future of Our Natural Resources" as part
of Earthweek festivities.
As interior secretary under the Carter
Administration and former governor of Idaho,
Andrus consistently advocated conservation. He
worked to implement a new approach to water
resources planning and to modernize the
Reclamation Act of 1902.
Andrus led the drive for comprehensive
Alaska lands legislation, devising a plan that he
says would protect the state’s scenic and wildlife
resources while availing the majority of its mineral
resources for development. He was instrumental
in obtaining Congressional approval for expan
sion of the Redwood National Park in California
The expansion warded off damage from logging.
As governor, Andrus strongly supported
regional approaches to the delivery of health
services and better state funding of education He
has been involved in Native Americans' receiving
a fair return on their mineral resources and in
asserting their water and fishing rights.
Andrus was born in Hood River, but spent
much of his youth in Idaho, where he currently
resides.
Preceding Andrus’ address, Gary Grimm and
Katy Flanagan of Mountain Visions productions
will present an 11-projector, 5-screen multi-media
wilderness concert. And following the speech,
pictures will be shown of Idaho’s famous River of
No Return, an area Andrus helped preserve.
Admission to the speech and concert is $1.
