Octogenarian, visiting prof
exhibit paintings in museum
Two oil painters will have their work featured
in a show that opens Sunday, April 26, in the
Museum of Art.
Paintings of Oregon’s people and places by
Charles Heaney, 84, will be displayed in the
museum’s first floor gallery through May 17.
Heaney’s admirers are frequently of an older
generation that relates to the western locations
Heaney paints — Black Butte, Tonopah, The
Dalles, the Columbia Gorge and the small mining
camps and towns of Oregon and Nevada.
Heaney began painting the Oregon lands
cape in 1929. He became especially fascinated
with the John Day country. In 1932, he had his first
one-man show at the Museum of Art. Most
recently, he was invited to exhibit in the gover
nor’s office in Salem.
Large-scale abstract painting by visiting art.
Prof. Gary Komarin also will be featured through
May 17 in the first floor gallery.
“I am interested in color as light — in paint as
the vehicle for achieving the unknown," Komarin
says. “My work is involved with landscape in so
far as landscape implies space, and the juxtapo
sition of relatively flat areas of color."
In the Photography of Oregon gallery, works
by Los Angeles artist Robert Heinecken will be on
display through May 17. Heinecken is a photo
graphy instructor at UCLA.
Heinecken’s photographs of television
images, known as videograms, have won major
awards throughout the United States. More than
25 16 by 20-inch color videograms will be
exhibited in this, his second American showing.
The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m.r
daily except Monday. For more information call
686-3027.
