Mariners snap
A’s win streak
at 11 contests
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Ri
chie Zisk’s home run with two
out in the eighth inning sent
Seattle to a 3-2 victory over
Oakland as the Mariners
stopped the A’s record winning
streak at 11 in the second game
of a doubleheader Sunday.
Rickey Henderson tripled and
doubled as the A’s won the first
game, 6-1, to set a modern
major league record by opening
the season with 11 victories in a
row. They broke the record of 10
set by three other teams — the
1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, 1962
Pittsburgh Pirates and 1966
Cleveland Indians.

was given the Miller Award for

Ducks win one, drop two in series

After a fourth-inning homer by Bill Gwinn (17) in the second game,
the Ducks jumped to a 5-1 lead, but OSU scored the next six points
to claim the win.

Oregon State dodged two
bullets Saturday to sweep a
doubleheader from Oregon,
7-3, 7-5, at Howe Field, aveng
ing an 11-4 pasting from the
Ducks at Corvallis Friday.
The series started well en
ough Friday as the Ducks paint
ed Corvallis green and yellow.
Oregon jumped to a 6-0 lead
after three innings and never let
up, reeling the OSU pitchers
with a 15-hit attack.
Five of the hits were for extra
bases, including doubles by
Kirk Cameron, Bill Gwinn and
Eric Martinez and a triple by
Randy Porter.
Meanwhile, Dean Kegler was
sailing along with an eight-hitter
and throwing a rare complete
game for the Ducks, giving the
senior a 5-2 record along with
his third straight victory.
Saturday, when Mike Talia
had gone five innings and al
lowed the Beavers only one hit,
it appeared Oregon was finally
getting some consistent pitch
ing.
The Ducks held a 2-0 lead off
a Gwinn RBI single in the first
and Steve Crum’s fifth-inning
homer, so there was no reason
for the crowd to believe Oregon
wouldn’t nail down the win.
But the Beavers tied it in the
sixth as Talia tired. OSU then
took advantage in the seventh
when Talia surrendered a line
drive double, reliever Jim
Givens walked one man and hit
another and Dan King served up
a meatball that Al Hunsinger
deposited over the left-field
fence Game one was in the
books.
In game two Oregon obliged
its fans by jumping out to a 5-1
lead behind Gwinn's two-run
homer and Mike Black s RBI
double during a four-run fourth
inning.
Dean Hummel had retired
nine straight Beavers, but OSU
then tagged Hummel and Sam
Manley for three runs to trail 5-4
after six.
It stayed that way until the
ninth, when the Beavers struck
for three runs off Givens, who
had pitched well in the seventh
and eighth. The Beavers were
unwillingly aided by Oregon’s
James Nutt, who dropped a fly
ball in the ninth.
OSU reliever Jim Grove held
off a mild Oregon threat in the
bottom of the ninth, leaving
Beaver coach Jack Riley all
smiles and Duck mentor Mel
Krause wondering about what
might have been.
“These games were an ex
ample of what happens when
our pitchers don’t keep the ball
down,” said Krause.
Oregon’s next game will be
Tuesday when they entertain
the University of Portland Pilots.

Rolling Thunder is the subject of a book by
Doug Boyd devoted to learning about his special

“Modern man talks of harnessing nature,
conquering nature and making nature a servant of
man. This shows that man doesn’t know the first
thing about nature and nature’s ways...Nature is
sovereign and man’s inner nature is sovereign.
Nature is to be respected. All life and every single
living thing is to be respected. That’s the only
answer.” — Rolling Thunder.
