    I Women spikers take breather
against thin Cougar contingent
By JODY MURRAY
Of the Emerald
Last week against UCLA,
Oregon's women’s track team
fretted over how to win the
meet. This Saturday at
Washington State, it will not be a
matter of how, but by how
much.
The Ducks, 1-1 in dual meets
after the 70-57 loss to the
Bruins, will take a breather in
Pullman against a team that is
so thin it has no entries in two
events.
Oregon will rest Quenna
Beasley (shot put, discus), Kari
Easton (high jump), distance
runners Eryn Forbes and Lisa
O’Dea and sprinters Grace Ba
kari and Melanie Batiste. In ad
dition, Leann Warren (800) and
Karen McDonald (discus) will
compete in the Kansas Relays
Saturday.
"It gives some athletes who
have been pressed hard a
chance to train through for the
Cal meet (Saturday after next),"
Heinonen says, "and it gives a
lot of our athletes who haven't
broken into our top three a
chance to compete in their best
events.”
The teams have met only
twice before and each time the
Ducks took the Cougars to the
slaughter (104-23 in 1977,
105-17 in 1978).
"Their team is developing,"
Heinonen explains. “They were
several years behind us several
years ago. They have pro
gressed since then, but they're
still behind.”
But even if the team score is a
foregone conclusion, there will
be some interesting individual
events.
In the javelin, Oregon’s Sally
Harmon (153-10) will duel
WSU’s Jeanne Eggart (159-10).
Eggart finished fourth in the
Olympic Trials last year.
The 400 hurdles will be tight
race with Oregon's Lisa Nichol
son (63.14) and Sharon Staple
ton (64.22) and WSU’s Carrie
McCarthy (63.24) and Nancy
McCarthy (64.24).
WSU's Leslie Duck is the
Cougars strongest performer in
the running events. In her
specialty, the 800, Duck has run
2:15.68 this season and has a
personal best of 2:09. She will
be challenged Saturday by
Oregon’s Joslyn West, who has
similar credentials
(2:16.2/2:09.45).
Oregon’s Lexie Miller, who
won three events in each of the
last two meets, will compete in
the long jump and 100 hurdles.
In the later event, Oregon has
one of the West Coast's stron
gest tandems in Miller and Kris
Costello. Each clocked a 14.04
last week, which qualifies them
for the AIAW national meet.
Top prep athletes sign
with Duck track squads
Oregon’s track teams signed
two top prep athletes Thursday,
adding depth to an already
strong men’s weight crew and
earning another top distance
runner for the women.
Brian Crouser, the 1980 state
champion in the shot put, dis
cus and javelin, will join his
brother Dean on the weight
squad. Brian, who attends Gre
sham High School, has
personal bests of 60-3 in the
shot, 178-0 in the discus and
237-11 in the javelin — a mark
that places him third in the na
tion among prep athletes.
Claudette Groenendall, from
North Salem High School, leads
the state this year in the 800 and
3,000 meters and was the 1979
state champion in the 1,500. Her
personal bests are 2:12.7 in the
800, 4:28.41 in the 1,500 and
10:07.1 in the 3,000.
Baseball, tennis join Olympics
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)
— Tennis and baseball were of
ficially approved as demonstra
tion sports for the 1984 Olympic
Games in Los Angeles.
Four national teams will play
baseball and there will be tour
nament pools of 16 men and 16
women in tennis.
Tennis was an Olympic sport
from 1900 to 1924. Baseball has
never been on the Olympic pro
gram but was a demonstration
sport at Tokyo in 1964.
Meanwhile, the 26 interna
tional federations which control
Olympic sports unanimously
rejected the offer by the Greek
government to provide a per
manent site for the Olympic
Games.
Many members of the IOC
have said the cost of a perman
ent site would be prohibitive and
that it is better to spread the
Olympic message by staging the
Games in different parts of the
world.
