Do the terms "gay" and
"homosexual'' have different
meanings, or are they pretty
much interchangeable?
People often use the term
homosexual to describe anyone
who experiences a sexual at
traction to, or a relationship
with, a person of the same sex.
However, this usage is mislead
ing. Correctly used, the term
homosexual describes persons
who have a continuing prefer
ence for sexual partners of the
same sex. The key word in this
definition is “continuing.” At
some point in their lives, many
people experience feelings of
sexual attraction to a person or
persons of the same gender.
Having such feelings does not
necessarily mean that you are
homosexual.
“Gay” is used by many as a
synonym for “homosexual," but
some gay organizations
deliberately use the term to
imply something beyond sexual
orientation. For many gay men
and women, the term implies a
consciousness of their whole
ness and worth as human
beings and their responsiblity to
educate people and confront
prejudice.
In this sense, "gay" defines
people socially and politically as
well as sexually.
I am a male in very good phy

I couldn't maintain an erection.
This has never happened to me
before, and it worries me.
Should I see a doctor?

It’s the middle of the night and
everyone has an excuse. Then, finally,
you get the one person who, even though
he's not very happy about it,
will come through. And you

I just call him in the first

So when the crisis is

times the problem is mental.
Possible reasons for having dif
ficulty with an erection are a
lack of privacy (children or
roommates nearby), fear of im
pregnating a woman, stress in
other areas of your life (exams
or a new job) and nervousness
about being with a new person.
Simply identifying feelings like
these may be helpful.
Occasionally, not being able
to keep an erection once
causes so much worry that it
may become difficult the next
time. In that case, you should try
to relax and avoid feeling pres
sure to “perform.” Unless this
happens with increasing
frequency and there is greater
concern, there is no need to
consult a doctor.
