A sports article, to the unini
tiated jock hater, reads like so
much undecipherable sludge.
A friend told me last week that
a story I wrote recently on bike
repair was the first “sports"
story she has figured out all
year.
“Why can't sports writers
create stories that everyone can
read?" she asked.
Rather than answer the ques
tion directly, I’ll describe a ba
seball game in which everything
down to the last pitch (when the
pitcher, who throws the ball,
does so to the batter, who hits
it).

The American Express Card. I
Don't leave school without it.
he isn’t trying to hit the ball,
stands between second and
third base (there are four bases:
first, second, third and home
plate) and tries to stop balls that
are hit his direction, bunted,
which is to say he hit the ball
very softly so it rolled slowly
toward third base.
Smutz bunted because he
hoped no one from the other
team would be able to get to the
ball in time to stop him. The
other team wanted to stop
Smutz from reaching first base,
which he could try to do after he
hit the ball. If Smutz could make
it to first base without being
stopped, he might have had a
chance to go to second, third
and home plate, which would
have score one point for his
team.
This is not to say that Smutz
made it to first base, because, in
fact, he didn't. The other team’s
pitcher, Billy Barfin, ran to the
ball, picked it up, and threw it to
teammate Sam Snitch, who
spends most of his time near
first base.
Snitch caught the ball and,
before Smutz could reach the
base and touch it with his foot,
Snitch used him own foot to
touch first base.
That meant Smutz was out.
Smutz, however, was not
convinced this was so. Accord
ing to the rules, he would have
had to go into the dugout, which
is where baseball players sit
when they are not playing, and
sit down.
Smutz contended his foot
touched first base before
Snitch’s did, which would have
meant that Smutz was indeed
safe (able to remain standing on
first base and go to other bases
if a teammate also hit the ball).
Snitch and Smutz got into a
heated beef, which is to say they
argued. At one point, Snitch spit
on Smutz's shoes. The spit
came from the large wad of
chewing tobacco implanted in
Snitch’s cheek. Baseball
players like to chew and spit a
lot.
The two came to blows, high
lighted by a Smutz uppercut
which knocked out Snitch’s
tobacco. The umpire, a guy
dressed in blue and black whom
no one seems to like, took both
men out of the game, but not
before Snitch cried to Smutz:
"Ya bum (a standard deroga
tory term in baseball)!”
