Equestrians prepare
for spring horse show
Jumpers, pleasure and stock horses and their riders will
be gathering in Corvallis for a two-day horse show that will
feature both English and Western riding.
The show, co-sponsored by Oregon’s Equestrian Club
and the Oregon State club, will be held at Manchester Arena,
the OSU Horse Center, Saturday and Sunday.
"We’re much stronger in the English events that we are in
the Western events,” says club member Beth Raffety. Eleven
riders will be competing Saturday for the Ducks in the English
events, which include collegiate jumpers, English equestrian
hunter seat and English pleasure hunter seat.
Six riders are entered in the collegiate Western events,
including stock seat, Western pleasure and bareback eques
trian.

Gymnasts set for Emerald Cup
An all-star cast will assemble
Saturday night in McArthur
Court for the eighth annual
Emerald Empire Cup.
The gymnastics spectacular,
presented by the National
Academy of Artistic Gymnas
tics, has added men’s competi
tion for the first time.
Some of the world’s top male
and female gymnasts, including
Olympians Bart Conner, Tracee
Talevera and Julie McNamara,
will be competing for the covet
ed cup.
"The male counterparts we
were able to attract to Eugene
this year signal the importance
of this meet on a national ba
sis," says Hideo Mizoguchi, di
rector of the NAAG boy’s pro
gram.
Oregon’s Kelly Crumley will
also be competing in Saturday’s
meet. However, James Yuhashi,
who won the NCAA title this
month in the floor exercise, will
sit out this meet.
Yuhashi shocked the gym
nastic world with a never-done
before 1% twist on his mount in
the floor exercise.
Also competing will be Tony
Pineda, a native of Mexico, who
will be making his American
debut. Pineda has been training
at the NAAG and represents the
first national men's competitor
for the academy.
Emerald Empire Cup compe
tition will begin at 7 p.m.
Saturday. Tickets are available
at the athletic ticket office or at
the gate.
Soccer squad
enters tourney;
Potestio hurt
Oregon's women’s soccer
team will face some of the West
Coast’s top soccer squads
today and Saturday at the
Westmont tournament in Santa
Barbara, Cal.
The Ducks will open the sin
gle-elimination tournament
against an experienced Stan
ford team, but will be without the
services of All-American for
ward Michele Potestio, who is
recovering from knee surgery.
The winner of the Oregon
Stanford game will face the
winner of the match between
Cal-Berkeley and UC Santa
Barbara match. The tournament
also includes UCLA (ranked
number two nationally), Arizon
a, Westmont and Chico State.
tugene warns
coaches for
spring sports
The Eugene Sports Program
is looking for coaches to over
see softball and baseball teams
during the spring.
Positions are open at all age
groups, which go from third to
ninth grade. The first practice
for both sports is May 4 and
each season continues through
late July.

Net team meets
Northwest foe
Oregon’s women’s tennis
team will take on its toughest
Northwest foe this weekend
when it hosts the University of
Washington Saturday.
The Huskies are the favorite
to again take the regional title.
The Ducks, paced by Lindsay
Bartlett who is undefeated in
dual matches this season, are
8-1 for the season after winning
the Southern Oregon Invitation
al last Sunday.
