A weary Oregon baseball
team woke up just in time to
sneak by Willamette with a 6-4
victory Tuesday at Howe Field.
“The ballgame was ho-hum,”
said coach Mel Krause. “The
players were tired, and they
played like they were tired.”
The game was the fourth in
five days for the Ducks, who
improved their record to 9-7
with fine relief pitching and
timely home runs.
The Ducks jumped out to a
quick 3-0 lead after two innings
behind designated hitter Randy
Porter’s two-run homer, but the
team then seemed to fall asleep
as the Bearcats rallied for three
runs in the fourth to tie the
game.
The score remained tied until
the bottom of the sixth when
Porter struck again with another
homer — a long blast over the
rightfield fence. Oregon then
used five walks to score two
more runs in the seventh for a
comfortable 6-3 lead, but it took
some heady relief pitching by

Netters pinch Portland,
extend win streak to eight
The Oregon men’s tennis
team continued to improve on
its best start ever as the Ducks
downed visiting University of
Portland 5-4 Tuesday to im
prove their season mark to 10-1.
“It was just another good
team effort,” said Oregon coach
Buzz Summers of the Ducks,
who have now won their last
eight matches. "We hadn’t beat
them the past two seasons and
almost didn’t this time.”
Oregon’s Thor Carlson
slipped by Kim Gourley, 3-6, 6-3,
6-4, in the top singles event to
get the Ducks rolling. Each team
won three singles matches.
“Thor played the best tennis
for us against Portland,’’
Summers said. “In doubles (Bill)
Whistler and Thor again came
through for us."
The Ducks took two of the
three doubles events, including
Whistler’s and Carlson’s 2-6,
6-0, 6-4 decision over Portland’s
Dave Thomas and Norm Wils

one run while striking out four
and baffling several hitters with
his sidearm delivery. Manley
picked up the decision, his
second of the year without a
loss.
"The last couple of times he’s
pitched, he’s come closer to
pitching the way I know he
can,” said Krause of Givens’
performance.

Golf squad ends
tourney in third;
UW claims first
Oregon’s women’s golf team
was unable to pull off any upset
at the Portland Invitational
Tuesday, ending the three-day
golf tournament solidly en
trenched in third place.
The University of Washington,
powered by five golfers who all
finished below 250, scored a
tournament-low 964 points,
coming in almost 100 points
lower than either of their league
opponents.
Oregon State finished second
with 1,058 points while the
Ducks ended the tournament
with 1,114 points.
The Husky golfers were led by
medalist Sue Sanders who
knocked in a 72 round Tuesday
to edge teammate Nancy Peck
for top honors. Sanders shot
236 for the tournament, while
Peck ended with a 237.
Low scorer for the Ducks was
Mary Siprell with 268 points
after posting a 86 round Tues
day.
Fencers claim top
places in epee
Oregon’s fencing club swept
the two top places in the epee
competition last Saturday in the
Oregon Progressive tour
nament.
Brian Smith went undefeated
to win the tournament, while
Dan Leach made his strongest
showing of the season by taking
second place.
. In women’s foil, Danan Mans
field finished third and Rose
mary Daszkiewicz finished
sixth.
The Oregon Division Cham
pionships, which will qualify
fencers for national competit
ion, will be held next Saturday at
the University.
