    Kings eliminate Portland
from NBA playoff picture
PORTLAND (AP) - Forward
Reggie King scored 20 points in
the second half and dominated
play inside as the Kansas City
Kings downed Portland 104-95
Sunday to eliminate the Trail
Blazers from the National Bas
ketball Association playoffs.
Kansas City led by as many as
12 points in the fourth quarter
before the Blazers managed a
final run.
Portland sliced the lead to
three, 96-93, on a driving basket
by Kelvin Ransey with 1:34 to
play. But Sam Lacey hit a
10-foot bank shot and King
scored on an offensive rebound
to put the game out of reach.
The Blazers, who haven’t won
a playoff series since 1977, shot
out to a 15-point lead, 41-26,
early in the second quarter. But
Kansas City outscored Portland
23-7 over the last eight minutes
of the first half to take a 49-48
halftime lead.
Portland opened a five-point
lead early in the second half, but
the Kings rallied to take control
behind the play of Lacey and
King.
King led Kansas City with 28
points and 15 rebounds. Otis
Birdsong added 22 and Scott
Wedman scored 19.
Portland’s Billy Ray Bates led
all scorers with 34 points, 22 of
them In the second half. Mychal
Thompson added 17 for the
Blazers.
The Kings beat the Blazers
twice in Portland to win the
best-of-three mini-series two
games to one and will meet the
Phoenix Suns in the semifinals
of the Western Conference
playoffs.
The series starts Tuesday
night in Phoenix, it is the first
time the Kings have won a
playoff series since the fran
chise moved from Cincinnati in
1972.

Oregon’s tennis teams
recorded wins this weekend as
both squads easily defeated
their opponents.
The women’s tennis team
won every match against Cal
State-Sacramento to take home
the team title at the Southern
Oregon State College invita
tional Saturday.
Oregon’s top seed Lindsay
Bartlett defeated Sacramento's
Anoela Snhmidt 6-1 7-6. to set
The Ducks defeated Portland
State 7-0 earlier in the day to
reach the finals, while
Sacramento slipped by Oregon
State, 5-4.
The men's tennis team also
had an easy time as the Ducks
earned their eighth victory in
nine matches, defeating Oregon
College of Education, 9-0.
The Ducks lost only one set in
nine matches. Mark Evans and
Steve Shaw both posted 6-0, 6-0
victories in singles competition
to pace the Oregon team.
The men's tennis team will
host Lewis & Clark College
today at 3 p.m., while the next
match for the women’s squad
will be April 11 when the Ducks
host the University of Washing
ton.

Timbers fall
to Seattle, 2-1
in eighth round
SEATTLE (AP) - Jeff Stock
slid the ball past goalie Keith
McRae on the eighth round of
the shootout to give the Seattle
Sounders a 2-1 victory Saturday
over the Portland Timbers in a
North American Soccer League
game.
After the score was tied 1-1 at
the end of regulation, neither
team could score during the
regular overtime period.
Both teams then ended the
regular shootout period of five
kicks each with two goals
apiece. The score remained tied
on the first two rounds of sud
den death before Stock's shot
won the match.
Seattle opened the scoring at
35:27, but Portland tied the
game with only 1:22 remaining
in regulation when the Timbers’
John Pratt scored by heading in
a clearing pass from Stock.
Portland, which has never
won in Seattle, saw its recored
evened at 1-1. The Sounders
are 2-0.
