    CORD feels a draft
Group braces for war
Pres. Reagan has reversed his campaign
position and now supports draft registration, the
Coalition Opposing Registration and the Draft
believes.
CORD held a Thursday morning press con
ference to call attention to the introduction in
Congress df a bill calling for a draft. CORD
member Dave Isenberg said the likelihood of such
a bill being passed is “extremely great.”
Isenberg believes the United States is gear
ing up for a “short-range, high-intensive" war that
will result in many casualties. “They want to take
live meat and turn it into dead meat,” he said.
To alert people to registration and the coming
draft, CORD members are concentrating on
speaking to high school students, an effort that is
meeting with some opposition.
"High schools are saying both sides must be
present — something that apparently doesn’t
apply to recruiters,” CORD member Christina
Cowger said.
“Their rationale is job placement," Isenberg
said, explaining how the recruiters circumvent an
equal-time forum. CORD only can speak to high
school classes at the invitation of an individual
teacher.
CORD tells students that registration is just
one option among several available. “They can
register, they can get draft counseling, they can
eventually decide not to register,” Isenberg said.
“What is important is that they consider all the
options," Cowger added.

CORD also plans to go to "outlying com
munities that may not have counseling" to
educate them.
CORD members sounded pessimistic when
asked if they believed people would resist a draft
on a scale comparable to the 1960s. "More
people may accept a draft, but anti-draft forces
are in better position now than they were at the
start of the Vietnam war,” Cowger said.
"My personal opinion is no," Isenberg said.
Theft trial opens for ex-coach
Jury selection began Thurs
day in the theft trial of former
University assistant basketball
coach Ron Billingslea.
The trial originally was
scheduled to begin Tuesday in
Lane County Circuit Court, but a
backlog of court cases forced
its delay.
Circuit Court Judge William
Beckett is presiding over the
trail.
Billingslea has been charged
with stealing $1,680 in state
funds between March and June
of 1979. Former assistant bas
ketball coach Mark Barwig also
has been charged with stealing
$2,000 in state funds during the
same period.
The two former assistant
coaches were indicted last May
by a special Lane County grand
jury investigating the University
athletic department.
A conviction on the first-de
gree charges, a Class C felony,
carries a maximum five-year
prison sentence and $2,500
fine.
Both Billingslea and Barwig
were assistant coaches under
Dick Harter and left the Univer
sity in 1978 after Harter became
coach at Pennsylvania State
University.
