The Lady Techsters celebrate after the game, cutting the net and taking coach Sonja Hogg for a ride.
Techsters claim championship
In a game that was probably over before it
began, Lousiana Tech steamrclled Tennesee,
79-59, Sunday at McArthur Court to win the AIAW
national title.
The victorious Lady Techsters ended their
season as the only undefeated basketball team in
the nation — male or female.
'It feels good," said Anglea Turner outside
an excited lockerroom “We deserved it. We’ve
worked hard and we’ve made it pay off.”
Turner, a 5-8 guard, scored 16 points,
nabbed four rebounds, paced the Techsters and
was named the tournament’s most valuable
player.
"I think we beat a very good basketball team
today,” said Debra Rodman, who pulled down 10
rebounds. "And we showed everyone, national
TV and everything, that good basketball can be
found (in the women's game).”
With a crowd of 5,500 watching, the Lady
Techsters opened the game with a three-point
play, but couldn't seem to get the correct com
bination of players.
With 12 minutes left in the half, Louisiana
trailed 12-11. But then things "clicked together,"
said Louisiana coach Sonja Hogg. "Everyone
started playing their role and doing it well."
The Techsters then pulled ahead on two
jumpers by Turner and didn't trail again, gradually
increasing their margin.
"It’s been a very difficult year, but these kids
pulled it out," Hogg said.
In the consolation game. Old Dominion
downed USC, 68-65. USC, the Cinderella team of
this year's final four, led most of the game, but fell
to defending champ ODU in the final 10 minutes.
"USC is a good team, a tough team. You have
to give them credit for fighting on despite the
referees," said ODU coach Marianne Stanley.
Knight, Indiana win NCAA title
In a game that almost didn’t
happen, Indiana gave North
Carolina a Knight to forget as
the Hoosiers walloped the Tar
Heels, 63-50, to win the NCAA
basketball championship Mon
day in Philadelphia.
It was the second trip to the
top for Indiana coach Bobby
Knight, who also won the title in
1976. For Dean Smith, North
Carolina’s coach, it was the
{?
third NCAA second-place finish
of his career.
The game came very close to
being postponed because of the
attempted assassination of
Pres. Reagan. But when it was
confirmed that the president
was in good condition, the
decision was made to play the
game as scheduled.
As they had done during the
entire tournament, the Hoosiers
blew away their opponent early
in the second half. They had
taken their only lead of the game
with the last shot of the first half
by Randy Whitman
Indiana then came out of the
lockerroom and went on a tear
to lead 49-40 with 16 minutes
left. The Hoosiers stretched
their lead to 11 points and used
a tenacious defense to keep
North Carolina off balance.
