Wrestlers topple at NCAA;
only Kelly survives first day
After completing its best dual meet season
ever and winning the Pacific-10 title, Oregon’s
wrestling team went to Princeton, N.J. with
hopes of its highest finish ever in the NCAA
meet.
Instead, after one day of competition com
pleted, the Ducks have just one wrestler —
190-pounder Ryan Kelly — in the quarterfinals.
The other eight, including three who were
seeded in the meet, lost in the first or second
round.
“I’m really disappointed,” said coach Ron
Finley. “I expected more out of the guys, but we
got off to a bad start and couldn’t come back.’’
Finley said he was especially disappointed
with heavyweight Dan Cook, who came into the
meet with a 23-4 record but lost in the first round
to Missouri’s Rick Romeo by a 9-8 score.
“I really thought (Cook) was going to place,
and I think he is as good as just about anybody
here,” Finley said. "But when you wrestle bad,
like Dan did, you’re going to get beat.”
Kelly entered the meet seeded 11th, but his
chances of placing high have improved thanks
to a couple upsets. In the first round, the Oregon
senior defeated Pat MaKay of Michigan, 10-6.
That should have moved him into a battle with
number-two seed Edgar Thomas of Oklahoma.
But Washington State’s Dan Morrow, whom
Kelly defeated for the Pac-10 title, upset
Thomas. Morrow was then defeated by Kelly,
7-2.
Kelly will wrestle seventh-seeded Mike West
land of Indiana State today in the quarterfinals.
Oregon’s other two seeded wrestlers both lost
in the second round after just getting by in the
first. Bill Nugent (142) and Jeff Stuebing (167)
won first round matches by a referee’s decision
after the scores were tied after regulation and
overtime.
Three Oregon wrestlers — Cook, Mike Erb
(118) and Mike Miller (177) — have been elimin
ated from the competition. The other five who
lost will re-enter the meet if the wrestler who
defeated them wins in the quarterfinals.
Men gymnasts close out
dual season against PSU
The men’s gymnastics team
will close out its dual meet sea
son Saturday night when it plays
host to Portland State University
at 8 p.m. in McArthur Court.
The meet will be a coed dual
with the women hosting Utah,
the nation's top-ranked team.
The PSU meet will be a tune
up for the Pacific-10 cham
pionships March 20-21 in
Tempe, Ariz., says Oregon
coach Bill Ballester.
The fifth-ranked men’s team
is coming off its strongest
weekend of the season. Last
Friday, the Ducks posted a sea
son-high 276.75 points to beat
Brigham Young University.
Last Saturday, James Yuha
shi set a school record 9.80 on
the vault and Alex Schwartz
recorded a 9.70 on the rings
as the Ducks defeated
then-13th-ranked New Mexico,
273.85-266.05.
"We may be getting close to
peaking,” says Ballester, which
makes him “optimistic” about
next week’s Pac-10 meet.

Oregon lost conference dual
meets this year to powerhouse
UCLA and Arizona State.
Ballester says the team will try
for its highest score of the year
against PSU.
Saturday's meet will be the
last dual for senior Yuhashi, an
All-American on the floor exer
cise; and Dan Johnson, who
finished 12th on the high bar at
last year’s NCAA meet.
The Ducks will be led by
Yuhashi, who has also scored a
9.8 in the floor exercise;
Schwartz; and Johny Moyal,
one of Oregon’s consistent
all-around scorers.
OSU has shrugged off
ASU defeat, coach says
CORVALLIS (AP) - Oregon
State coach Ralph Miller says
he's confident his team has
shrugged off last Saturday's
20-point loss to Arizona State
and is ready for the NCAA bas
ketball playoffs.
“I think the players put their
minds back where they should
have been,” Miller said Thurs
day. "As far as I can tell, we re in
just about as good a shape as
we can be going into the tour
nament.

“I don’t think there’s any
mental problems because of the
loss to Arizona State,’’ he said.
“Afterall, they’re a fine basket
ball team. Now we’ll get to test
the theory that you should lose
one before you go into the
playoffs.
“I don’t think that loss hurt
them as far as confidence in
their own ability is concerned,”
he said.
The Beavers left Thursday for
Los Angeles, where they
planned to watch the NCAA
first-round game between Kan
sas State and San Francisco.
Oregon State plays the winner
of that game on Saturday.
Miller was asked if the players
might be thinking about the
Beavers’ recent lack of success
in post-season play. Last sea
son Oregon State lost to Lamar
in its first playoff game. The
previous year, Nevada-Reno
knocked the Beavers out of the
first round of the National Invi
tational Tournament.
