Vet loan interest rates increase to meet state’s costs
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The director of
the state veterans' home and farm loan
program today increased the 5.9 percent
interest rate to 6.2 percent on most
existing loans and to 7.2 percent on
loans applied for after last Dec. 31.
The increase is the first one
since May 1971, when the legislature
authorized variable interest rates for
veterans’ loans. Rates on loans made
before then are set by law at 4 percent.
Staryl Austin, director of the
Department of Veterans’ Affairs, said
veterans with loans made after May 1971
will have a choice of having their monthly
payments increased or accepting a
three-year loan extension and keeping
their payments the same.
He said the interest increase on exist
ing loans would raise the monthly
payment by about $9.90 on a $50,000
loan.
Austin said the interest increase on
new loans will mean a monthly payments
boost of about $50 on a $50,000 loan.
Officials have said an interest rate
increase was inevitable because the
state has had to pay close to 9 percent
interest on bonds sold to finance the
loans.
A $240 million bond sale is scheduled
for April 7, and Austin said interest bids
probably will be near the maximum 10
percent that the state can pay under
state law.
