Women win 'scrimmage’
Seniors Adams, Towriss shine in final league game

There is nothing like the
“last” game to bring out the
best in an athlete.
Oregon's women’s basketball
team, despite a few off
moments, had one of its best
all-around outings Saturday as
the 12th-ranked Ducks blew
Portland State off the court,
112-55, in their last regular
season home game and gave
two seniors a warm send-off.
Banners draped about the
court nicknamed each player,
said goodbye to Debbie Adams
and Allison Towriss, and invited
everyone back to Mac Court to
see the Ducks in the AIAW final
four.
The game, though, could be
summed up in one word —
“boring," said Oregon coach
Elwin Heiny. “We won the scr
immage."
A scrimmage or not, it was still
the last regular season game for
Oregon's seniors. Despite play
ing only 23 minutes each, the
two ended up in the money.
Debbie Adams shot 92.3
percent from the floor for 24
points — only 20 points away
from moving into second on the
all-time scoring list.
Allison Towriss again tied the
single-game assist record,
handing out 11 against the Vik
ings and nabbing four steals.
A standing ovation greeted
the two Ducks as they left the
floor. Adams, appropriately,
sank the ball at the 3:54 mark
for points 99 and 100 on an
assist from Bev Smith.
“It was nice, everybody
clapping," said Towriss,
downplaying the standing ova
tion. "Debbie’s the one that had
the great game.”
Despite mistakes by the
Ducks, it was a lopsided game in
which Oregon scored two
points for every one by the Vik
ings. Only a PSU basket in the
final seconds kept the Ducks
from blanking their foes for the
final four minutes.
“It was a blowout," said Tow
riss, who fouled out for the third
time in her life (the others were
in high schools and at Lauren
tiean University in Canada).
"We had fun, but there was
some sloppy play.
“But most of the game, we
rose above them, playing to our

level instead of theirs."
That, said Towriss, wilt be im
portant to get through regionals
and to the AIAW final four.
The Region 9 tournament in
Missoula, Mont, next weekend
stands directly in Oregon’s way.
The Ducks, 23-5 this season
and 12-0 in the league, return to
zero since only the tournament
winner is guaranteed a berth at
nationals.
“We have tougher things to
look forward too,” said Heiny.
In preparation for the future,
Oregon practiced its zones
against the outmanned Portland
State squad, which shot only
30.1 percent (22-73). Oregon
shot 64.6 percent from the floor
(51-79) and 76.9 perc jnt from
the line (10-13).
"We still need to work on
them (zones)," said Heiny. "It's
important that we establish
ourselves in these games
working on things that will
help us later."
"We might surprise teams
because we've never played a
zone before,” said freshman
center Allison Lang, who fin
ished with 15 points and four
blocks. "We use it a lot in prac
tice, the vets against the
freshman — we beat them every
time."
Oregon’s freshmen had a few
moments of their own to show
off. With nine minutes left in the
second half, five Duck freshman
took to the floor and added
another string of points against
PSU.
Diane Hiemstra made every
shot she attempted to add 10
points and MaryAnn Stoican
added 13 to the Duck total.
Junior Bev Smith scored a
game-high 25 points and con
tributed six assists, four blocks
and four steals to the Duck
totals.
