Giant-killers face Duck women
Oregon center Alison Lang has blocked 57 shots
in 25 games this season.
bU, uvv xaKe on
top-ranked cagers
The division's face may be different, but
behind it lurks a giant-killer.
They are the Seattle University Chieftains,
21-4, who make a stop at McArthur Court tonight
to take on Oregon's 12th-ranked women's bas
ketball team, 20-5. Seattle has dropped from
Division I to Division II, but is virtually the same
team the Ducks faced last year, says Oregon
coach Elwin Heiny.
“They have just about everybody back,” says
Heiny. "They have beaten almost everybody in
our league with the exception of us and Oregon
State.”
Seattle’s top two players are senior center
Sue Turina and junior guard Sue Stimac. Stimac
comes into the contest with a 18-point average
while Turina tosses in 17 a game.
‘‘I expect a pretty close game,” says
Oregon’s Bev Smith. “Last year we beat them by
10 up there and by 30 down here. But they are a
much-improved team this year and we will have to
play very good to beat them.”
The Chieftains defeated Arizona State 77-62,
while ASU downed Oregon by one point earlier in
the season.
Saturday the Ducks will tangle with the
Washington Huskies, 18-7. Oregon has beaten
Washington once this season, 99-70, but Heiny
says that this time it could be closer.
Smith continues to lead the Ducks in both
scoring and rebounding. She is pouring through
19.2 points per outing while hauling down 11.6
boards a game.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight against
Seattle and for 2 p.m. Saturday against Washing
ton.
Cagers search for L.A. wins
After a hard-fought 75-69 win
over Oregon last January, UCLA
coach Larry Brown said, "I think
the Oregon program of the fu
ture will be the one that could
give UCLA the most trouble.”
At that time, the Duck men’s
basketball team was looking
pretty good. Just two nights
before, it had posted its most
impressive win of the year — a
74-67 win over USC.
The Trojans will be given a
chance to avenge that loss
Saturday night in Los Angeles.
The Ducks will meet the Bruins
lomgnr ai rauiey ravmun.
As for Brown’s comments —
the future may be one thing, but
the present is quite another.
Oregon’s fortunes haven’t ex
actly skyrocketed since that im
pressive weekend in Mac Court.
The team's record since then
has been 1-3, including a last
minute 70-68 loss to University
of Washington last Saturday.
On the other hand, the L A.
schools are trying to regain their
sunny composure after one loss
apiece to the Bay Area schools.
UCLA’s loss destroyed any
outside chance it might have
had of dethroning Oregon State
and regaining it’s traditional
domination of the conference.
Oregon, record-wise, is look
ing for a minor miracle in its last
four games to pull out a winning
season. The Ducks are now
11-12, and will face the Arizona
schools in Eugene after the Los
Angeles trip.
Gym squads compete
Oregon’s fifth-ranked men's
gymnastics team will meet un
defeated and ninth-ranked Cal
State Fullerton in a high
powered contest tonight at 8 in
McArthur Court.
The meet takes on special
significance because the loser
might be eliminated from the
NCAA meet in April. The NCAA
will select “two, or possibly
three teams from the West, but
more likely two,” says Duck
coach Bill Ballester. UCLA is a
shoe-in for one spot, and that
leaves Oregon, sixth-ranked
Arizona State and Fullerton's
Titans to battle it out for the
remaining spot
Oregon’s women’s team
takes on some of the top teams
in the nation in the two-day
Shanico Invitational, held in
Corvallis.
Beset by injuries during last
week's meet, the Ducks com
pete against six other teams in
Gill Coliseum beginning at 7:30
tonight.
Third-ranked UCLA tops the
Shanico field, which includes
sixth-ranked Oregon State,
Louisiana State (seventh),
Brigham Young (11th), Nebras
ka (20th) and Washington.
