Portland couple donates
presidential portraits
A visual gift of Americana in
the form of 38 presidential por
traits has been given to the
University by a Portland couple.
The acquisition complements
the University’s collection of
presidential signatures in the
Library’s Special Collections.
The collection of oil paintings,
titled “Gallery of Presidents,’’
was executed by Lawrence Wil
liams, a contemporary portrait
artist. The portraits were com
missioned by the United States
Bicentennial Commission in
1974 and were completed in
1975.
The original set of portraits,
one of six sets done by Williams,
toured the country extensively
during the Bicentennial
celebration in 1976, says
University Foundation special
programs director Hope Press
