Since I began using a diaph
ragm, I haven't been lubricated
enough during intercourse.
Does a diaphragm block
lubrication?
First, let's look at where
vaginal lubrication comes from.
The main source of lubrication
comes from the walls of the
vagina. The vaginal walls
"sweat” droplets of mucoid
material, which eventually coat
the entire vagina. This sweating
action is an almost immediate
response to any form of sexual
stimulation. Two other very
minor sources of lubrication are
Bartholin’s glands (located just
outside the vagina) and cervical
mucous, when present.
It is doubtful that your diaph
ragm is blocking lubrication.
The diaphragm only covers the
cervix and a small portion of the
upper vagina. The small amount
of mucous blocked by the
diaphragm should not make a
noticeable difference. Some
times insufficient lubrication
can be caused by tension or
nervousness about lovemaking.
If you just have started using a
diaphragm, and feel self-cons
cious, this could result in ten
sion and dryness. Once you feel
more comfortable about using
your diaphragm, your lubrica
tion should increase.
Meanwhile, you might try an
additional lubricant, such as K
Y jelly. Be sure to check the
label. It will state whether it can
be used with a diaphragm.
Never use vaseline with a
diaphragm or condom. It will
deteriorate the rubber.
Lately I have been very de
pressed for no reason, and a
friend told me it was because I
stopped taking birth control
pills. Is there such a thing as
“pill withdrawal?”

body is simply adjusting to the
change in hormone levels, just
as it did when you began taking
the pill.
