Court reservation system relieves overcrowding
A new reservation system is
helping to relieve the over
crowding of the racquetball and
tennis courts on 15th Avenue.
In the three weeks the reser
vation system has been in ef
fect, lines have been eliminated
and community use has de
clined, giving University
students a greater chance to
use the covered tennis and
raquetball courts, says Karla
Rice, director of the University
Intermurals program.
In the first 14 days, 325 rac
quetball and 75 tennis court
reservations were received.
Courts are closed for morning
PE classes. Reservations have
been filled during peak hours —
3:30-8:30 p.m. Rice predicts use

of the courts will increase dur
ing spring.
Reservations must be .made
the day before play in Room 103
Esslinger between 8 a m. and
11:30 a m. The master list is
posted in both the room and in
the courts.
In response to student sug
gestions, Rice says she expects
to extend the reservation hours
until 2:30 p.m. next term and
allow reservations for the day of
play.
“It’s sort of a hassle, having to
go to the office the day before,”
says Kim Black, who plays in the
courts regularly. “I think it’s
worth it though. At least you're
sure of getting somewhere to
play.”
But not all players are pleased
with the reservation system.
“It destroys the spontaneity of
play,” says Mike Fiske. “How
many people know a day in ad
vance when they want to play?”
Some people play without re
servations, especially on the
relatively empty tennis courts.
‘‘I’ve never had a
reservation,” said one tennis
player. “It’s too much trouble
when there’s always empty
courts.”
The 15th Avenue courts are
the only ones on the reservation
system. Esslinger racquetball
and uncovered tennis courts on
15th Avenue and Alder Street
are available on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Evaluations, as well as sheets
expaining the reservation
procedure, are available in
Room 103 Esslinger.
