Women claim two easy wins
Two games and two 30-point victories keyed
the weekend as Oregon’s women's basketball
team easily claimed wins over Washington State
(79-49) and Eastern Washington (81-50).
“We were able to play with intensity
throughout,” said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny
after Saturday’s victory over EWU. “But it's really
hard when the game is decided so early to still
keep the intensity.”
Oregon, which has a 9-0 league and 20-5
season record after the two conference wins,
quickly established its dominance in both games.
Against the Cougars, Oregon jumped to a 18-2
lead before WSU got their second basket. At the
half, Oregon lead 42-22 and claimed the first eight
points of the second period.
"Our height really does things to people we
play,” said Bev Smith, who finished with 16 points
against WSU and 19 against EWU.
Blocks were definitely a factor as Smith and
Alison Lang combined for 11, with Lang knocking
down seven. But the Cougars even had trouble
getting across the time line as Oregon's guards
maintained a full-court press for most of the
game.
Against the EWU Eagles, Oregon again came
out strong, gunning to a 9-2 lead. With four
minutes left in the half, no Duck starters remained
in the game as Oregon claimed a 37-22 halftime
lead.
Oregon came out even stronger in the
second period, grabbing the first six baskets on
steals and fast breaks. Heiny substituted freely,
but Oregon still jumped ahead 69-29 with eight
minutes to play.
"We rise to the occasion,” said guard Angie
Snider, who added 14 points in both games.
"When you know your playing a team that’s not
quite up to your caliber you play to win, but bad
habits can emerge.
“But it (playing weaker teams) is giving a lot
of people confidence — confidence that there are
people who can come off the bench and play a
tough team,” says Snider. "It’s giving us all,
everyone, confidence in each other."

to block out WSU's Jeannie Eggart Friday.
Everyone played at least 15 minutes in the
two games. “People get playing time because
they deserve it,” said Heiny. “I don’t want to
single anyone out because a lot of them played
well. In fact, everyone did."
