Gymnastics teams to wage ranking battles
Rankings will be the key this
weekend as the Oregon gymna
stics teams travel to Arizona for
two meets in two days.
The men will take on Arizona
State and Arizona in dual meets,
while the women face California
and Arizona State in a three
way meet before facing Arizona
in a dual.
The men will put their
number-four national ranking
on the line Friday night against a
highly touted ASU team that is
currently ranked 14th. Oregon
coach Bill Ballester emphasized
before the season that "Arizona
State will finish third, and could
challenge for second” in the
Pacific-10 Conference.
That second-place spot is
currently held by Oregon, and i
the Flying Ducks are coming off
their best showing of the
season, a 274.60 score against
Stanford. The Ducks set
season-high marks on the
pommel horse (45.35) and the
rings (46.30) while improving
their season mark to 4-1.
Another plus was freshman
Johny Moyal, who won the all
around with a personal best
55.85. Ballester has called
Moyal “potentially the best
gymnast we’ve ever had.”
Meanwhile, the women try to
take another step toward a
national ranking this weekend
against a strong'ASU team
which knocked off powerful
Oregon State earlier this year.
Oregon already has posted wins
over 20th-ranked Minnesota
and 17th-ranked Stanford —
tough teams on a tough
schedule which coach
Henriette Heiny feels "will help
us get exposure.”
Revenge could be on the
minds of Arizona State. Last
year, the Oregon women pulled
an upset victory over the ASU
team, which was then ranked
Friends sometimes question
your taste in movies.
But theyll see them with you anyway.
A /4^p It sounded fantastic in the newspaper.
But only to you. Still, you had to see it, and with
a little arm-twisting your friends agreed to
see it too.
You’ve already heard a
barrage of jokes about your taste
in movies since the curtain came
down. And, knowing your friends,
it’ll go on for weeks.
So, to make it up to them,
and show them your taste isn’t
bad in everything, you do
something a little special. Tonight,
let it be Lowenbrau.
Lowenbrau. Here’s to good friends.

The women are coming off a
narrow 137.5-136.05 win over
Stanford in which freshman
Maureen Nolan took second in
the all-around with a 34.20
mark. Nolan and freshman Holly
Holmes back up Heiny’s claim
that "the quality of the freshmen
has improved. It will be those
two, along with Dawn Haberland
and (Sara) Gustafson, who will
key the Duck hopes against
Arizona State."
Swim squads
wrap up duals
against OSU
Oregon’s swimming teams
will wrap up their seasons with a
dual meet at Oregon State
University Saturday at 7 p.m.
Both Oregon teams have
topped the Beavers this year in
earlier duals.
The men’s squad, 6-2, will use
the OSU meet as a tuneup for
the NorPac championships at
Leighton Pool on Feb. 19-21.
The women, 5-2, upset the
Beavers, 89-51, in January.
They will compete without the
services of their top three
divers. Debbie Sill, Laura
McNaught and Cindy Light will
skip the meet in order to travel
to the University of New Mexico
for the AIAW Zone Diving Qual
ifying Meet Feb. 16 and 17.
“The meet will be much
closer without our three divers,
but I think we can pull it out
again,’’ said Oregon coach
Virginia Van Rossen.
Senior All-American Kathy
Hemmer is only two-tenths of a
second away from the qualifying
standard in the 1,000 freestyle.
Sophomore Tina Helm is Ore
gon’s only AIAW qualifier, in the
200 backstroke.
The top 12 finishers in each
event at the New Mexico diving
meet will advance to the AIAW
championships March 18-21 in
