St. Helens symposium set
By LESLIE FARRIS

The University Outdoor Pro
gram will sponsor a three-day
symposium on the eruption of
Mt. St. Helens in conjuction with
scientific, economic, and envir
omental interest groups.
The symposium is scheduled
for the third week of May to
coincide with the first anniver
sary of the May 18 eruption.
It will include a variety of
speakers, workshops, panel
discussions, geologic displays,
films, slideshows, photo ex
hibits, live music and other
forms of entertainment.
An organizational meeting for
the symposium is being held
today at 4:30 p.m. at the Out
door Program office in the EMU
basement.
Symposium steering commit
tee member Debbie McKay says
the committee welcomes any
one who would like to get in
volved in organizing and
developing the event. Those in
terested should attend the
meeting or contact the Outdoor
Program at 686-3730 or
686-4365.
“The forum will look at all
different aspects of the eruption
and its affect on land-use
policies, the economic
ramifications and environmen
tal issues," McKay says.
"It’s to celebrate this unique
natural phenomenon but also to
satisfy a quest for knowledge
and understanding.
“There are many learning op
portunities for students through
the symposium, not only in the
scientific and historical
processes that occurred in the
volcano, but in the organization
of the symposium as well,”
McKay says.
The objectives of the sympo
sium are:
• To increase understanding
of the scientific processes in
volved in the eruption and to
learn what new information on
volcanic activity in the Cas
cades has resulted from recent
research.
• To promote awareness of
the economic and social im
pacts of the eruption on the
Northwest.
• To look at the cultural and
spiritual relationships that have
existed between the volcano
and surrounding populations.
• To publicize environmental
issues and to motivate public
involvement in the planning
process for the local and
regional communities as well as
the mountain itself.
McKay says the fate of Mount
St. Helens and its resources
already is being planned with
out any process for public in
volvement. The symposium will
inform participants of man
agement issues and perhaps
motivate public involvement,
she says.
The Outdoor Program will be
initiating trips to the volcano
and other areas of geologic
significance, such as Mt. Hood,
Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainer, Mt.
Adams and The Three Sisters.
Library receives rare books
A rare book collection, in
cluding seven volumes printed
before the 16th century and the
serialized first printings of
Charles Dickens' novels, was
recently given to the University
library.
The 1,300 volumes include
the work of printers Wynkyn de
Worde, the first to print in Eng
lish, and of Baskerville, an im
portant pioneer of English type.
Value of the books is estimated
at $43,000.
Authors represented include
Spenser, Lamb, Shakespeare,
Chaucer and Thackeray.
Some highlights of the col
lection are the first editions of
Boswell’s "Life of Johnson,”

several first editions of George

works printed by Baskerville in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
The collection also contains
many samples of late 19th and
early 20th century presses in
England and America, as well as
more than 30 books of literary
criticism written by Bishop
Quayle.
“Bishop Quayle was the ideal
collector," says Edward Kemp,
acquisitions librarian in the
Special Collections Division
"We have seen many a
collection where the favorites
have become passe, but in this
case good taste prevails."
But the gap in years between
the bishop’s death and receipt
of the collection, when the
books were respected but not
cared for, does cause need for
serious care and restoration,
Kemp says.
For that reason, it will be
several years before they’ll be
displayed for the general public,
according to Kemp Re
searchers may use them on a
limited basis.
