Gymnasts double efforts, fly past Stanford

Double trouble emerged for
Stanford University’s men's and
women’s gymnastics teams
Friday as Oregon swept a co-ed
dual gymastics meet in McArth
ur Court.
The Oregon men, ranked
fourth nationally, cruised by the
Cardinals 274.60-251.55, while
the women upset their
17th-ranked Stanford counter
parts 137.5-136.05.
The win improves the men’s
season record to 4-1, while the
women are now 7-1 and knock
ing on the door for a top 20
national ranking.
’’We’re pleased to defeat an
other nationally ranked team,”
said Oregon women’s coach
Henriette Heiny, whose team
knocked off 20th-ranked
Minnesota two weeks ago.
"This win should help us get
into the rankings."
Leading the way for the
women was freshman Maureen
Nolan, who took second in the
all-around with a season best
34.20. Junior Sara Gustafson
scored 33.95 for fourth place.
Stanford was almost a one
woman team as freshman Mer
ilyn Chapman, a U S. national
team member and elite gym
nast, captured first in every
event and won the all-around,
scoring 36.55. Teammates
Anne Smith and Julie Bledsoe
sandwiched themselves
between the Ducks’ top two all
arounders for third and fifth
place.
But the meet outcome came
down to one event — the uneven
bars. And the Ducks’ depth

second on the bars. Following
Holmes was Nolan (8.7), Jean
ette Stewart (8.4), Chris Krueger
(8.25), and Sara Gustafson
(8.2).
"Maureen Nolan and Jean
ette Stewart had excellent
meets,’’ said Heiny, "and in
general we showed im
provement over most of our
meets this season."
For the highly favored Oregon
men, the win over the
20th-ranked Cardinals was far
from being a lackluster perfor
mance.
“We’ve been working pretty
hard, and it’s about time we
looked like we did tonight,” said
men’s coach Bill Ballester.
“High bars is the only place we
really could have improved to
night.”
A big plus for the Ducks, who
captured first and second place
in all six events, came from
freshman Johny Moyal, who
took all-around honors with a
personal best of 55.85.
Moyal won the parallel bars
(9.15) and was second on three
events. Other individual winners
for Oregon were James Yuhashi
on the floor exercise (9.55), Bob
Leverence on the pommel horse
with a personal best (9.35), Alex

(9.55), and Dan Johnson on the
high bar (9.70).
The Ducks also set season
high team marks on the pommel
horse (45.35) and rings (46.30).
Leading the Cardinals was
Mike Lee, who took second in
the all-around with a 53.55.
Women down Grizzlies, 94-55
Oregon’s women’s basketball
team ended its Montana road
trip on a positive note, earning a
lopsided 94-55 victory over
Montana State University in
Bozeman Saturday.
Only the pre-game score was
close, as Allison Towriss started
Oregon’s scoring in motion by
hitting six of the Ducks first ten
points. The score was 18-2
before the Grizzlies got another
chance on the boards.
At the half, the Ducks were up
by 30 points, 43-13, and contin
ued to add to the margin in the
second half.
The victory over MSU also
afforded the Ducks their second
opportunity in seven games
against a 2-3 zone Both Mon
tana universities use the zone
defense.
"We moved the ball well
against the zone,” said Oregon
coach Elwin Heiny. "We were
better prepared for it tonight
since it was identical to Mis
soula’s.”
While the win over the Grizz-'
lies was lopsided, it wasn't
because MSU was that bad,
Heiny said. “We went in wanting
to play a good game.”
The Ducks succeeded, put
ting 10 of 12 players in the
scoring column. Allison Lang
and Debbie Adams shared high
point honors with 17 apiece.
Bev Smith added 14, Diane
Heimstra put in 11 while Towriss
contributed 10.
Towriss also had a good night
on defense, holding MSU’s
Vicki Heebner, who scored 24
points against Oregon State

SOSC in dual
Swimmer Phil Oaks clocked
22.79 in the 50-meter freestyle
while Jon Nordy added a 5:07
in the 500-meter freestyle
to lead Oregon’s men's
swimming team to a 62-49 win
over Southern Oregon State
College Saturday.
Oregon opened the dual meet
with a win in the 400 medley
relay while SOSC took the final
event, winning the 400 freestyle
relay. Both teams accumulated
firsts in seven individual events.
