Artifacts from the oldest
known systematically excavat
ed prehistoric site in the Wil
lamette Valley, including tools
dated up to 4,000 years old, are
now on display in the University
Museum of Natural History.
The exhibit is based on the
1976 excavations of two prehis
toric sites near Salem conduct
ed by a museum team led by
University survey archaeologist
for highways Richard Pettigrew.
In 1976, the widening of the
North Santiam Highway near
Salem made necessary the ex
cavation of the sites. Ar
chaeological sites are legally
protected and must be excavat
ed if they cannot be avoided
during construction projects.
The museum is open from 10
a m. to 3 p.m. Monday through
Saturday.
