Montana falls to Duck pressure, 89-57
Taking to the road proved
profitable as Oregon’s women’s
basketball team swept past the
University of Montana Thursday
night 89-57.
But it was a victory Oregon
had to fight for. The Lady Grizz
lies held to within four points of
the Ducks throughout the first
half, trailing 36-32. In the
second half, Montanas
defense, which played a strict
zone all evening was able to
hold Oregon up to the 10 minute
Gymnasts seek victory
over Cards in co-ed meet
After absorbing defeats to na
tionally ranked opponents,
Oregon’s men’s and women’s
gymnastics teams will try to
bounce back against Stanford
University in a co-ed meet at 8
p.m. in McArthur Court.
Both Cardinal teams also
have national status — the men
are 20th, the women 17th. The
Oregon men will be favored in
the dual while the women will be
a slight underdog.
The Duck men’s team is 3-1
and ranked fourth nationally
after falling to third-ranked
UCLA two weeks ago.
"We shouldn’t have much
trouble with them, if we go out
and do our routines,” says
men’s gymnastics coach Bill
Ballester. "But we can’t take
them too lightly, either. They’re
much better than they have
been in the past.”
Stanford has a season-high
team score of 265.90 in a three
way meet, while the Ducks have
tallied a 273.20 best this season.
The Ducks will be led by all
arounder Kelly Crumley (56.17),
floor exercise All-American
James Yuhashi (9.90) and ring
specialist Alex Schwartz (9.75).
All three hold the school record
for their event.
A victory over the Cardinals
will be more difficult for the
Oregon women.
Freshman Merilyn Chapman,
a U S. national team member, is
Stanford’s premier performer.
She is considered one of the
nation’s top five all-arounders.
The Oregon women, 6-1 this
season, will counter with fresh
man Maureen Nolan and junior
Sara Gustafson. Both scored
34.35 in the all-around last week
to pace the Ducks to a season
best 138.15 against Oregon
State University last week.
Stanford has scored a 135.35.

said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny.
"Our players, especially on the
perimeter, were able to pick the
zone apart."
Bev Smith lead the Ducks,
scoring 38 points in 40 minutes
to tie the all-time University
scoring record set by Debbie
Adams. Smith shot 73.7 percent
from the floor, 14-19, and 10-11
from the line.
"The three on the perimeter,
Diane (Heimstra), Angie
(Snider), and Bev (Smith), were
able to work past their zone and
score,” Heiny said.
Oregon is now 5-0 in league
play and 15-5 for the season.
Saturday, the Ducks will meet
Montana State University.
“We re looking for another
game like this one here — but
more lopsided,” Heiny said.
