Art prof oversees
treasures of the Orient
Ellen Johnston Laing, Univer
sity art history professor, has
been appointed the art mu
seum’s first curator of Oriental
art, says museum director Ri
chard Paulin.
Laing’s research interests
have focused on the history of
Chinese painting. She will assist
in planning special Oriental art
exhibitions.
"Having access to these ma
terials will enable me to use
them for lecture classes and
seminar teaching,” Laing says.
“I'm excited about planning and
working with the exhibitions as
a means of-enhancing public
knowledge and appreciation of
Oriental art.
The curatorship carries no
additional salary and will be
held concurrently with Laing’s
regular faculty position.
Laing came to the University
in 1979 as the Maude Kerns
Distinguished Professorship in
Oriental Art. She previously
taught art history at Wayne
State University and at the
University of Michigan, Ann Ar
bor.
