Duck defense stuns Haney, dunks Trojans
By JODY MURRAY
Of the Emerald
A full half-hour after the final
buzzer, Jim Haney was walking
the underground hallway,
glassy-eyed.
“This one hasn’t sunk in yet.
I’m walking around, trying to...”
The words trailed off as he
sauntered into a blaring locker
room.
What had flung the Oregon
coach into a grinning stupor
was a convincing 74-67 win over

screaming Mac Court partisans.
And one stunned Stan Morri
son, the Trojan coach.
“I thought Oregon played
superbly in every phase of the
game," said the coach of the
Pac-10’s fourth-place squad.
"They were aggressive on the
spread court, and they
outrebounded us.
"We were our own worst en
emy.”
The Ducks, now 3-5 in the
conference, used a viciously
aggressive defense to limit the
Trojans to only eight of 25 field
goals in the first half. Such effort
usually leads to fouls, and the
Ducks committed 12, which
USC turned into 11 points.
But Oregon was willing to give
up the free throws.
"We weren’t out there worry
ing about fouls," said Mike

Clark, who once again led
Oregon with 22 points and
seven rebounds. ‘‘I had the
most swats at the ball on the
team, and I only had one foul.”
While Southern Cal was trying
to find the range in the first half,
Oregon outrebounded them
18- 12 and committed only eight
turnovers.
The Ducks also hit some "hail
Mary” jumpers that had fans
holding their breath until the ball
rubbed the net. Fred Cofield
connected on three 25-footers
and Barry Walker added three
from 20 feet out.
“We shot from the perimeter
more than usual in the first
half,” Haney said, "but I thought
at halftime that we would not be
able to live on the perimeter, but
had to try to get the ball inside.”
The Trojans settled down in
the second half, shot 16 of 22
and pulled to within six with 8:38
left, but the Ducks answered
with an 11 of 18 performance to
put USC away,
Haney’s assessment of the
game was one of controlled op
timism.
“What is left now for us is to
develop the winning habit. We
got our second straight victory
against a good team (Washing
ton State was the first).
"But we can’t look back and
rejoice in the victory instead of
looking ahead. We’re fortunate
to have UCLA next. There will be
no problem with motivation.
"I think we’re on the verge of
being a damn fine team.”

Matmen start rough road trip
With its number-six national
ranking on the line, the Oregon
wrestling team will travel to the
Midwest this weekend to take on
some of the country’s finest
teams, including number-one
Iowa State University.
Oregon, the highest-ranked
team in the West at 15-1, ven
tures into the nation’s hotbed of
wrestling to meet the University
of Minnesota, University of
Northern Iowa, Iowa State and
Mankato State.
Oregon will begin this wres
tler's dream or nightmare,
depending on how they fare,
Sunday afternoon and finish
Wednesday night.
“This is really a great trip,"
says coach Ron Finley. "It gives
every one of our wrestlers a
chance to wrestle against
someone who is already ranked.
If we can get a few upsets, we
can move ourselves right into

the rankings.
"Depending on how we do,
we could really move up in the
standings, or we could move
back out of sight. I think we have
a very strong team, but then so
does everybody else out there.”
Without a doubt, the Iowa
State match Tuesday night will
be the Ducks’ toughest match of
the year. ISU has six nationally
ranked wrestlers with a few
other grapplers who have been
in and out of the rankings all
year long.
"I’ve been really looking for
ward to this trip all year. No
doubt that it’s a tough, tough
trip, but it really gives us a
chance to prove what we can
do," said Finley.
