What is your opinion of the
risks and benefits for women
who use I.U.D. 's and have never
been pregnant?
The following guidelines are
from the Planned Parenthood
Federation of America’s reports
from October, 1980, which con
cluded that for “most women”
the IUD continues to be a safe
and effective method of birth
control.
Not all women are good can
didates for IUD insertion. Con
sideration must be given to age,
marital status, sexual habits,
lifestyle, previous history of pel
vic infections, childbearing
plans and the appropriateness
of other methods.
Women under 25 who have
had previous pelvic infections,
who have never been pregnant,
and who have several sexual
partners are seven to 12 times
more likely to develop infections
than others
When choosing an IUD, the
non-medicated ones, such as
the Lippes Loop, are larger and
women who have had a child
tend to have better luck with
them. The medicated lUD’s,
such as the Copper 7 or the
Progestasert. T, tend to cause
less menstrual blood loss, work
well for women with a small
uterus, and women who have
never had a child
lUD’s may be inserted at any
time as long as the women isn’t
pregnant. Insertion is usually
easier during a woman’s period
because the cervix is softer,
there is less likelihood of insert
ing into a pregnant uterus, and
the bleeding associated with
insertion tends to reduce the
patient’s apprehensions.
During the first year the IUD is
96 percent effective in prevent
ing pregnancy and tends to in
crease in effectiveness with
continued use. If a woman
becomes pregnant with the IUD
in place, it should be removed
immediately.
Insertion and removal of
lUD’s should always be done by
a trained medical practitioner,
not by the patient.

make the IUD safer and to ex
tend the life of the smaller,
medicated lUDs so that they will
not require replacement every
three years. It is important to
remember that not all women
respond to lUD's in the same
way. A woman’s medical his
tory, lifestyle, and habits will all
contribute to determining
whether the IUD is a good
choice for her. Once the IUD is
in place, women are protected
and need not worry about lack
of spontaneity, taking pills, in
serting foams, jellies or a diaph
ragm.
Correction. Planned Parent
hood would like to apologize to
the readers of last week’s Sex
pert column of Jan. 22. In re
sponding to the question about
‘‘what causes blue balls” one
important piece of information
slipped by. The pain from blue
balls that men usually exper
ience in the scrotum following a
prolonged period of sexual
arousal without release is a real
physiological phenomenon.
This pain is caused both by the
engorgement of blood in the
tissues and pressure from un
released sperm in the
epididymis of the testicles. This
pain is usually relieved by
ejaculation, whether through
masturbation or coitus. Thanks
for calling this to our attention.

County considers ticket tax
Lane County Commissioners,
looking for ways to fill the coun
ty's barren coffers, are con-,
side/ing adding a 10-percent
surcharge to the price of tickets
for some public events.
But the Event Admissions Tax
apparently has little support.
“Back East, it’s a fairly com
mon form of revenue,” explains
county management analyst
Diane Helickson.
The entertainment tax has
been levied “primarily on sport
ing events,” but it could include
concerts, speeches and theater
performances, Helickson says.
The tax could be imposed
either as a flat rate or as a per
centage of admission fJtice,
depending on the decision of
the county commissioners, she
says.
But some commissioners say
they don’t like the tax. Commis
sioner Scott Lieuallen says the
commission is “not inclined" to
support it.
