MERWIN
In a reading of his
poetry and prose
A New York-born poet and poet
translator, Merwin has traveled widely
and currently resides in Hawaii; he has
published works translated from French.
Spanish, Latin, Portugese, Chinese, and
Japanese originals - including Twenty
Love Poems and A Song of Despair,
from Pablo Neruda, in 1969 In addilon
to the Pulitzer Prize in 1971 and the
Shelley Memorial Award in 1974, he has
received grants from the National En
dowment tor the Arts, the Rockefeller
Foundation, the Academy of American
Poets, the National Institute of Arts, and
the Arts Council of Great Britain.
W.S. Merwin is know as the purveyor
of the "stone and bone" school of
poetry; throughout his career he has
departed radically from an earlier style of
controlled, elegant verse (e g. A Mask for
Janus, 1952) toward looser, individual
forms (The Drunk in the Furnace, 1960),
and has been moving more toward open,
surrealistic poems since the publication
of The Moving Target (1963). He works
less with "craft" and "old techniques"
than with "imagination" and "enigmatic
necessity;" his translations also demon
strate a gradual move from archetype
and myth toward a kind of mysticism that
is evidenced in his prose piece "Turg
vinder's Stone” (from The Miner's Pale
Children, 1970).

AGATHA
Starring Vanessa Redgrave and Dustin
Hoffman On December 4,1926, Agatha
Christie, the world's greatest mystery
writer, disappeared What may have
happened during the next 11 days is far
more suspenseful than anything else she
ever wrote. Was Agatha researching
background for a story or just taking a
break from an unhappy marriage? Hoff
man plays an American reporter sent to
decipher the mystery. AGATHA is a
reasonable and possible - yet fictional
answer to what actually happened
during the 11 days that Agatha Christie
was missing.

LUMIERE
Jeanne Moreau, the noted French ac
tress, wrote and directed LUMIERE, as
well as starring in it. LUMIERE tells the
story ot four actresses of different ages
and their relationships with men, with
their careers, with time - the almost
invisible enemy - and with one another
Each is torn in some different way
between the traditional feminine needs -
stability, the nurture of some fixed situa
tion - and the compulsion to appear and
move in the light. The light, the Tumiere"
of the title, is limelight, the world's
attention. At its best, LUMIERE is a
subtle, funny and moving film SUBTI
