Ex-hostage hospitalized
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - One
of the 52 former hostages,
Robert Ode, was hospitalized
Tuesday night, suffering from
pneumonia and exhaustion, a
spokeswoman at National Ho
spital said.
‘'He had a little fever and a
cough and obviously fatigue,”
said Susan Steif, the hospital’s
director of public affairs.
Ode, who at 65 was the oldest
hostage, checked into the ho
spital's emergency room shortly
after 7 p.m. and was admitted to
the hospital, Ms. Steif said. He
was listed in satisfactory condi
tion.
State Department spokesman
Jack Tuohey said Ode, accom
panied by a member of the
department’s medical staff,
went to the hospital from the
hotel where the former hos
tages were gathering in this
Washington suburb. He said
Ode was admitted for rest and
observation.
Ms. Steif said Ode underwent
some tests and was resting
overnight before having more
tests Wednesday.
Ms. Steif said that during the
day the staff at the hospital had
been watching the freed hos
tages being welcomed to Wash
ington.
“Everyone was excited about
it. We all had been watching TV
and wearing our yellow ribbons
-and weeping. It had been an
exciting day as it was,” she said.
