Women upset Gophers
in close gymnastic meet
From the first event to the last
Oregon’s women s gymnastics
team showed its skill and ability
Friday night as the Ducks
defeated 20th-ranked University
of Minnesota 133.25 to 129.70.
The victory leaves Oregon
with a 6-0 dual meet record.
Junior all-arounder Sara
Gustafson keyed Oregon's vic
tory by scoring a close, but
decisive victory over Big-10
champion Robin Huebner. Gus
tafson, who tied for first in the
vault (8.90) and floor exercise
(8.75), earned 34.65 points from
the judges, just edging
Huebner’s 34.40.
Huebner tied with Gustafson
in the floor exercise.
After the victory over the
Big-10 team, which was favored
to win the meet, Oregon coach
Henrietta Heiny said she wasn't
surprised by the victory.
"I thought we could beat
them,” said Heiny about the
Ducks first match against a
nationally-ranked team. "Be
cause we’re from different
regions they really did’nt know
what to expect.”

The Ducks surprised the
Minnesota crowd, and pleased
about 1,000 gymnastics fans, as
they soared to an early lead over
the visiting Golden Bears.
Gustafson lead Oregon in the
floor exercise, while Maureen
Nolan followed in fourth place
with 8.25 and Holly Holmes in
fifth with 8 20.
In the Vault, Gustafson tied
with Nolan for first, while
Minnesota claimed the next
three places. Holmes was sixth
scoring an 8.25.
Minnesota took the top places
in the balance beam and un
even bars as Judy Klein scored
an 8.85 in the uneven bars and
Karen Ploor scored a 9.20 in the
beam, the highest score given
any performance.
But Holmes claimed second
on the bars with an 8.60 and
Gustafson did the same on the
beam (9.00).
Minnesota was very confident
coming into the match, Heiny
said. “But I think they were a
little surprised when they saw us
warming up ."

Ducks dump Cougars, 70-66
On a night that almost saw
Oregon State fall from the top,
Oregon pulled its men's basket
ball team from the bottom of the
Pac-10 with a gritty 70-66 win
over Washington State Univer
sity Saturday.
The win pulls the Ducks up to
2-5 and seventh place in the
conference, due to their 9-7
overall record.
It was the first time Oregon
has defeated the Cougars in
Pullman since 1975. The Ducks
also broke an eight-game losing
streak to the Cougs.
Oregon coach Jim Haney,
who has visibly distraught after
Thursday's 102-91 loss to
University of Washington, said
Saturday’s win was reminiscent
of the mental toughness his
team displayed in the California
game.
After leading at halftime,
32-30, Oregon’s Fred Cofield
popped in a couple quick
r
jumpers to key a quick 39-30
Duck advantage.
But the Cougars, led by Steve
Hamel's 19 points, pulled back
into contention.
With 1:57 remaining and the
Ducks ahead 63-62, the Cougs’
Aaron Haskins missed the first
of some one-and-one free
throws Oregon's Mike Clark
and John Grieg skied for the
rebound, but knocked into each
other and lost the ball.
Oregon women
lose swim meet
Oregon's women's swimming
team was defeated, 62-51, by
the UC-Santa Barbara in a dual
meet Saturday.
Oregon senior Kathy Hemmer
was top point-winner for the
Ducks, capturing first-place fin
ishes in the 200 butterfly, 200
freestyle and 1,000 freestyle, in
which her 10:25.13 time was 12
seconds below her lifetime best.

WSU’s Angelo Hill grabbed
the ball and laid it in to give the
Cougars their first lead of the
game.
But Grieg came back down
the court with the Ducks and
scored after an offensive
rebound to put Oregon ahead
for good
The Cougars used a
tight-to-the-basket defense to
bottle up Clark, Oregon’s lead
ing scorer While Clark man
aged 10 points, Oregon for
wards Grieg and Felton Sealey
contributed 15 and 16 points,
respectively.
