Raiders snatch second Super Bowl victory
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Oak
land's well-advertised game
plan to go for the big play trans
ferred from the offense to the
defense Sunday as the Raiders
claimed their second Super
Bowl championship
"I told Rod Martin that if he
caught more passes than me,
I'd be mad, and he almost did
it,” said wide receiver Bob
Chandler, who caught four
passes, after Oakland's 27-10
triumph over the Philadelphia
Eagles
Martin, an outside linebacker
who plays opposite much better
known teammate Ted Hen
dricks, set a Super Bowl record
with three interceptions and
called it "the greatest day of my
career.”
The Raiders, slight
underdogs going into the game,
seemed to take control the
moment Martin stepped in front
of tight end John Spagnola and
intercepted a Ron Jaworski
pass at the Oakland 47-yard line
in the second minute of play
"It might have looked easy,
but believe me, it wasn’t easy,"

a brilliant performance, high
lighted by three touchdown
passes
“The turning point of our
season was when Jim took over
at quarterback. He gave us
leadership, just like the kind
Kenny Stabler used to give us,”
said wide receiver Cliff Branch,
who caught two of Plunkett’s
touchdown passes.
Philadelphia coach Dick Ver
meil, who has rebuilt the Eagles
in five years from a league
doormat, made no excuses for
his NFC champions.
‘Td say the Oakland Raiders
were a better football team
today,” Vermeil said "They de
serve to be world champions.”
Eagles star running back Wil
bert Montgomery sat placidly in
front of his locker, attempting to
explain the Philadelphia disas
ter.
"All year we were a second
half ballclub. Today, it was like
we gave up. It was a terrible
feeling,” Montgomery said.
The Raiders' second Super
Bowl title came in their first
season without Stabler. The vet
eran quarterback was traded to
the Houston Oilers last year for
Dan Pastorini, who broke his leg
in October. The American Con
ference champions also were
handicapped by wild-card sta
tus, which meant they had to
win three postseason games
before reaching the Super
Bowl.
“But I knew when we made
the playoffs we were as good as
any of the teams and had a
chance to go all the way,” said
Oakland coach Tom Flores.
The Raiders’ biggest play of
the game also was the longest in
Super Bowl history, an 80-yard
pass play from Plunkett to run
ning back Kenny King that gave
Oakland a 14-0 lead.
“The play wasn't designed for
me to go deep. I'm supposed to
go about six yards upfield and
cut for the sidelines," said King
“But when I saw Jim looking
upfield, I broke up the sideline. I
thought (Eagles cornerback)
Herman Edwards might get a
hand on it, but I think he was off
balance, and he couldn't.”
Flores said he stressed in his
pre-game talk with Plunkett,
“We re not going to be conser
vative at all. We’re going to keep
going for the big plays, like we
have been.”
He added, "It was one of
Jim's best games. I don’t know
about his statistics, but he came
up with the right play at the right
time."
Oregon gymnasts blitz
fourth-ranked Canadians
Oregon gymnastics fans dis
covered the quality difference
between America and Canada
as the third-ranked Ducks
thrashed the University of Brit
ish Columbia 266.90 to 186 40
in a men's meet in McArthur
Court Friday.
British Columbia is ranked
fourth in Canada.
Kelly Crumley paced Oregon
by taking the all-around com
petition with a 55.10 score.
Crumley won the floor exercise
(9.35), vault (9.55), high bar
(9 35) and tied for first on the
parallel bar (8.85).
Alex Schwarz added a 9.30
first on the rings, and Johny
Moyal took the pommel horse
with a 9.20 mark as the Ducks
easily outdistanced the out
manned Canadians.
“Obviously, British Columbia
is not at our level of gymnas
tics,” said Oregon coach Bill
Ballester.
The men were back in action
Saturday, combining with the
women's team and the National
Academy of Artistic Gymnastics
to entertain 3,000 fans in the
“Night of Stars.”
“The intention was to display
gymnastics in Oregon, and I
think we accomplished what we
wanted to do,” commented
Ballester
Oregon will be idle until Feb
6, when they begin conference
action against Stanford at
McArthur Court.
